I don’t think so. It’s been around for a while but was unmaintained for a bit so it wasn’t compatible with Plasma 6. That’s why it was removed from the Debian repositories. It’s just been a case of someone who wanted to maintain it coming along. AFAIK it’s mainly aimed at Smart TVs.

I’ve just been through this recently. I decided to have my 2 backup HDDs spin down when not in use (99% of the time). I ran into an issue though where I needed them to wake up for SMART tests (which SMART didn’t trigger). Tried a few things that didn’t work so just set them to spin all the time. There’s about a 1-2w difference when they’re spinning all the time. So it’s just not something worth worrying about IMO (In the UK with high energy costs that comes out to 2.5 pence per day roughly).

I remember there being a study years ago where they even went so far as to heat it until the wicking material (cotton iirc) started to burn then claimed vapes contain the chemicals that were created by the combustion (if you let your vape go dry or you hold the button way too long it’s disgusting, nobody would vape like that all the time).
