I run UptimeKuma for monitoring a couple of things, but honestly, I’m pretty much my only user and my homelab is independent of the regular home network, so I don’t really care too much. I’ve been considering some simple log monitoring… when I get around to it :-)

0·3 days agoHis talk on the subject is great, I really enjoyed it and I agree with is take in that it’s the journey, not the destination.

0·3 days agoJust to put this into context: social media platforms such as Facebook will not block hate speech, racism and fascism and will let society devolve because $profit$. But no-one is allowed to be mean to (checks notes) a piece of software?
Fuck this shit.

0·4 days agoYeah, I know, I was thinking more along the lines of the Distrowatch popularity ranking of which specific pages get the most hits (and Gemtoo pretty low down these days).

Technology@lemmy.world•Gentoo Needs Your Help! Several Sponsors Have Pulled OutEnglish
0·4 days agoI wonder what the number of users is various distros. I used Gentoo on my desktop around 15-20 years ago and really loved it, but now I prefer vanilla Debian. I think Arch took over a large part of the Gentoo user base.
Can’t wait for the Milwakee vs Dewalt vs Makita exoskeleton discussions.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
0·5 days agoAt this point I find the errors are pretty rare and much prefer self-checkout, mainly because it’s faster, and as you put it, I often don’t care for peopling.
I moved from sysadmin to technical pre-sales a few years ago and I’m happy with the move. Though honestly I enjoyed being a sysadmin as well - from my experiences it’s more the work environment and the collegues than the actual work you do that makes or breaks a job.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•My generation was probably the last one to get told "You won't have a calculator in your pocket all the time" by our math teachers.
0·5 days agoExacty. A calculator is useless if you don’t know how to structure the problem and what and how to calculate it.
Pretty solid for various handicaps and such.

Technology@lemmy.world•Creative Industries Have Been Eviscerated by AI, Data Shows: "One of the worst stretches for media employment in modern US history."English
0·8 days agoI think creating art is a goal onto itself and it’s something people will do regardless of AI. Like, if I like to write, the act of writing is the important part, more than the end result. Similar for music, movies, etc. For all the ai generated slop that’s out there, there will always be that person who enjoys picking up a paintbrush and going to town.

Technology@lemmy.world•TP-Link opens global preorders for its first Wi-Fi 8 router, but ban keeps it out of US market — US left off launch list as FCC freeze refuses to thawEnglish
0·8 days agoYeah, I’ve ran the gamut from Linksys (started with the WRT-54gl, legendary), to TP-Link and Asus, moving to Syonology and finally landing on Ubiquity. I agree - by far the most capable and reliable of all these. Especially since I’ve gotten into setting up a homelab with VLANs and such. The synology has support for this but it’s not the greatest.

World News@lemmy.world•‘This can’t go on’: tens of thousands protest against housing crisis in SpainEnglish
0·9 days agoFrom the article: The long-simmering anger at soaring housing costs boiled over late last month, when 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who uses a wheelchair, was evicted from the home she had lived in for 70 years. The octogenarian said she was unable to afford the 230% rent hike demanded by the investment fund that bought her apartment.

This should be illegal for politicians, honestly.
