Yeah these interaction are becoming quite fraught because there is extreme danger of AI use just shifting the burden from one person to another. That guy wrote the code super fast with AI, but you had to do an additional round trip during code review with him to eliminate that weirdness. He gets a bonus for doing twice the work in half the time, you get nothing.
Recently I asked someone to do a really nasty inventory of some automated test libraries and they came back with this super detailed report. I was impressed with their thoroughness for 2 minutes until I realized it was all AI generated. It didn’t boil the issues down like I needed done. When I asked the engineer about it, she didn’t even have familiarity with the content, as if she hadn’t even read it. She very brazenly cautioned me, “I’ll just say right up front that Claude did most of this so I can’t guarantee anything.”
Won’t be asking her help again, and won’t feel bad when she’s eliminated.
