Donald Trump has ordered his special forces commanders to draw up a plan for the invasion of Greenland - but is being resisted by senior military figures, The Mail on Sunday has learned.

Sources say that the policy ‘hawks’ around the US President, led by political adviser Stephen Miller, have been so emboldened by the success of the operation to capture Venezuela’s leader Nicolas Maduro that they want to move quickly to seize the island before Russia or China makes a move.

British diplomats believe that Trump is also motivated by a desire to distract American voters from the performance of the US economy before the mid-term elections later this year, after which he could lose control of Congress to the Democrats.

Daily Mail is a tabloid, not a legitimate source.

Not saying the story is untrue, but we need a better source.

And the Epstein files mess. Trump and his clown posse should be careful. They could end up Kennedy’d by an acronym tired of their shit.

Hmm this seems to be an exclusive with them as I can’t find a better source.

Reminder the Daily Mail is not in the business of reporting the news but rather keeping right wingers angry.

So archive link to avoid funding a paper that historically always sides with fascists: https://archive.ph/8JgX8

Every criticism about the United States being bent on world domination is 100% true. Other countries better band together because this will not simply end once the entire western hemisphere is under their control. That is just the first step to re-exerting global hegemony. It’s necessary in order to make war with China, for example.

OP, for the love of fuck, when tensions are this high, please post anything other than an article from the Daily Mail.

Also, this is a repost from earlier.

I like your optimism, and I also look forward to the day when any news article gets only one post on Lemmy instead of 12.

So we’re gonna tank the economy even more right? The EU/Canada would probably sanction us hard if this happened

I think it could go kind of bad for the US if they don’t remember that US bases on a lot of foreign soil only exist as a matter of their host country’s consent. A lot of American hard power, intelligence and military reach is tied up in defense networks that are goodwill arrangements. You already hear talks of the 5 eyes not volunteering information to the US anymore, if they spark a conflict with NATO there’s bit just a lot of their facilities that are potentially forfeit.

I find it weird that they try to frame it as “before China or Russia makes a move”. Sure, they may have info the rest of us don’t, but there has been nothing indicating Russia is even able to sail there, let alone actually try to take the island from NATO. China doesn’t seem to give half a shit what the west is doing. They keep doing nothing, and it keeps working, because USA just won’t stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Meanwhile USA already has a base on Greenland (plural if you count the radioactive mess they couldn’t be bothered to clean up, and just let disappear in the ice), and carte blanche to do whatever the fuck they want to anywhere on the island.

Trump does have access to information that we don’t. He also has access to extremely knowledgeable advisors. But he chooses to ignore those and just goes by what FOX News says and gut feeling instead.

As much as I can’t wait to see Trump meet his maker, I’d rather see someone take Stephen Miller and Russ Vought out since most of the evil idiocy of this administration comes through them.

The Daily Mail is never to be trusted. Even if this is true (which it may well be), its appearance in the Daily Mail is no evidence for that.

This article smells fishy. Another commenter mentioned the source not being reliable. But the whole concept of “drawing to a plan to invade Greenland” sounds off to me. Remember the US probably already has detailed campaign plans for something like this.

Part of responding well in a crisis is planning the response ahead of time. In a military context, that means wargaming and campaign planning. I expect the US military has offensive and defense plans for a wide range of situations. That likely includes everything from options for offensive actions in China to plans for defending a conventional invasion from Canada.

To be clear, I’m not picking on the US here. Every professional military in the world is going to do this sort of preparation. Part of a prepared military is having a plan of action in rapidly developing situations.
