It doesn’t change anything because it’s all other peoples’ money the authorities are compensating them with. City and County governments are cravenly subservient to police as we are all aware.

The authorities that directed him to be arrested for 1st amendment protected activities should be sued directly. The Council members, the police are likely shielded by their qualified immunity.

The taxpayer may foot the bills, but there are options to add other stipulations to any potential settlement in addition to a monetary award such as people getting fired, mandatory training with all the local police regarding the first amendment and so on. Hopefully something like that can be rolled into any litigation.

Additional training is laughable. It’s not a lack of training that is the problem, it’s the lack of consequences. People respond to incentives, and those are geared to exempt the police, and local leaders, from consequences as long as they are on the good side of local and state authorities.

People getting fires is almost never included in any settlement, and even if it was, their union contracts get them reinstated later with backpay, or just award them all the backpay until the case is decided while they pick up another job elsewhere.

Ie, the cop that Jeffery Dahlmer’s little laotian boy victim ran to when he escaped, naked, wounded, raped, that then gave the kid back to Dahmler to be further raped then murdered and eaten, was let go from the force for it.

He filed a complaint and got reinstated, later promoted, and got all the back pay, he got a months long paid vacation out of it, that will teach them!
