It’s pretty unsettling that someone could stay in a private community for so long without anyone realizing. Discord can feel casual, but when private conversations are involved, it’s worth being more careful about who has access and what information is being shared. Even things like choosing a distinctive username, sometimes with a letra diferente para copiar, are small details people tend to personalize.
Without going into any details, I’ve been in physical gatherings where there turned out to be interlopers. Once you’re organising a certain number of people that’s bound to happen, and as a union you should strive for high participation rates.
That said, I get your point and I do largely agree that people should be careful to fully trust semi-closed online discussions and groups, but I don’t think it would’ve made a difference here.
Discord is not secure, period.
Use trusted software with end-to-end encryption with only trusted people and hope to hell they don’t get hacked or raided.
No amount of encryption is going to stop a mole who social engineers their way into a secure chat.
Sigh, this is not a Discord issue, it would have happened even if they used Matrix, or any other protocol.
They were betrayed by boot lickers, the were not hacked.
When trying to organise colleagues you need to exercise a certain level of trust or it will never get off the ground. Unfortunately boot lickers will take advantage of that. It’s to be expected.
I mean… Did anyone expect anything different? The more people you add to a system the more the likelihood of a bad actor existing increases. It’s how society has always been
