It would be so easy for me to laugh this off and say, “duh just don’t go to the third world country that is the USA,” but anything they do will spread to other parts of the world.

Maybe wipe an old phone and just have signal to communicate with family until I cross the border? I wouldn’t even mind paying a few bucks to make a new signal account without a phone number.

Looks like it’s time to carry a dummy phone with you if you decide to visit the US. Not really sure why any non-citizens would want to do that at this point though.

I’m in Florida, which is a “stand your ground” state.

You can try that “no warrant” shit here, and you’re gonna get your fucking head blown off

My guy, I agree with you in spirit, but the law has been barely hanging on for a while now. The law won’t protect you from a bunch of SS neonazis with more funding than the fucking Marines when you shoot one. If you haven’t noticed, they’re a bunch of cowards who roll in packs and shoot people for just being too close to them.

You’ll bring one, maybe two with you if you’re quick or they’re lined up all nice, but that’s about it

Florida is a Border State. ICE do raids at other places including just randomly on the street because of the high population of Latinos and people from South America.

I don’t think you understand that what’s happening is they roll up on people in a van, grab them and don’t announce who or what they are. There’s video all over the Internet of this.

In the US, the boarder is considered anywhere within 100 miles of an international boarder. I.E. Oceans, Lakes that are adjacent to another country and the actual boarder with another country.

Ice agents can setup checkpoints anywhere within this area and search your phone. Since most Americans live near the coasts this “boarder area” covers an 90% of the population.

Nope. This came up a few weeks ago and I checked it very carefully before posting because I thought it was true and was trying to post a map of the border including the airports.

Border patrol can only work near airports.

The 100 mile range near any airport is a myth.

Of course you live in Florida. Your other comments are all explained. How sad, to treat others the way you do when you get even the barest hint of push back. Does it make you feel less impotent, to call people “asshole” and “cunt” when they weren’t even being rude to you? (The mods have, sensibly, removed those comments, and they may feel free to do so to this one, should they feel that this violates community rules). To paraphrase what you said in a different comment I saw a minute ago: if you can’t take the heat, step away from the fire.

Quit treating other people like the sack of dirt you perceive yourself to be. Do better.

At 20 (5+9+6), the Ace turns into a 1. You win the hand at 21.

By asking for another hit, you’re going bust on purpose. Anything over 21 is an automatic loss.

The Knight First Amendment Institute argued as amicus that searching expressive and associational content on phones demands a First Amendment warrant. The Second Circuit rejected that argument, holding that neither the Fourth nor the First Amendment carves out a special exemption for phones at the border.

Wow. Yeah… We all need shitty travel phones with very little on them now. That’s fucking gross.

As a us citiczen I’m more and more looking at my phone as a hostile device. I have Graphene on one phone and an iPhone, but with how things are going these days who knows how secure these devices really are. Apple iOS is a black box. Android is not much better, and they’re now faster than laptops and most desktops. They can be running and recording and reporting anything and still sip battery life. I’ve since deleted social media apps outside of lemmy and HN. I use my little e-reader more than my phone. All my personal stuff is in encrypted cloud that is not iCloud, I don’t use biometrics to unlock it. But I still don’t trust it. I’m beginning to think carrying it in a foil bag until I need it is a good idea.

I agree, it’s not a tool, it’s a compromised and dangerous device and I have to carry it with me carefully. I have always turned off my location from time to time and carefully managed permissions, but nowadays here’s what I do:

      • Graphene
      • no biometric login
      • no stale data on the device. If I won’t need it while I am mobile, does it need to be on my phone?
      • location off, BT off, and airplane mode when going into grocery stores or any surveillance a happy retailer.
      • factory wipe or alternate phone before traveling internationally, especially to countries with questionable rule of law, including my own
      • minimal non-FOSS apps (getting less every time I redo the phone)
      • any app that has a usable web portal or can be accessed on desktop only (Facebook, reddit) does not get installed.
      • no pairing with cars or other BT devices that are known to be sketchy.

If I controlled the software on a deeper level, I would set it up to have a toggle where it will only connect to the cell network every 30-60 minutes. There is little in my life that is more important than a half hour response time, so why am I continuously broadcasting my triangulated location? I would have that toggle turned on 90% of the time.

This is nothing new. I don’t agree with it but people are acting like this was rolled out yesterday. Unless we can reverse the supreme court ruling on it, nothing will prevent them from searching phones at airports or within 100 of borders.

Yeah I should have added that they need a warrant IF you use a passcode. If you use biometrics they may fall into loopholes that they can search it. Essentially they pretty much own your body when arrested, but not your thoughts. So they can’t make you turn over the code without a warrant. Aka if you are going to get arrested turn off your phone. It makes complete sense that you would want to have battery when you got out of jail 8 hours later or I guess longer if they actually had a charge to pin on you. “Why did you turn off your phone” “to make sure I could call someone to pick me up after I get out or call a cab service”

I always hit “Factory Data Reset” before crossing a border, but now they aren’t just at (or nenar) borders.

Time to keep any data on a server, in a jurisdiction that tells the MAGAt motherfuckers where to stuff it.

Sadly hard to find a commercial service. Sync is in Canada, and they’re a compelte joke now that Carney is ruining the place. Tuta is in Germany, and they have AfD running a new Nazi takeover one chunk at a time. Proton is Switzerland which is good… For Citizens. Most of us aren’t Swiss, though.

Honestly we need someone to make a service like Proton, and put it in Iceland…

Which will be good, until that fuckwit Cheeto mistakes it for Greenland and invades.

This is what happens when you allow conservatives (fascists) to have control.

This is why it is your responsibility (duty) to do whatever is most likely to prevent that from happening.
