I’ve witnessed so much of it at this point that I’ve come to accept it.

It still hurts to watch though. Nothing you do will convince them until they hurt just like the rest of us. Even if you tell them that it will hurt them eventually, even if you beg and plead for their own safety, until they feel that pain they won’t care.

Rural American voters weren’t actually the conservative base they are today until relatively recently, at least not in all the same ways we see them today. Through the first half of the 20th century rural mine workers and even agriculturalists all over were part of progressive movements of their time.

they got their abortion ‘win’, guns aren’t being ‘taken away’, dipshit is doing a bang-up job hating the ‘correct people’ and shredding social services, and the climate change hoax is sufficiently contained (it is not, but these are science deniers)…

so i guess there’s no single issue left that’s calling them… so ‘data centers’ it is.

Nothing will push them to vote Dem.

They may vote for an independent candidate or not vote at all, but they will not vote Dem, regardless of how many Dem policies align with their own.

Is it really defeatism, though? Simply not voting at all could turn tides. And it’s not like Republicans haven’t proven them right again and again and again and again. Republicans are conditioned HARD to never, ever consider voting for a Democrat.

It’s not saying that Republicans are voting Democrat, though. It’s just saying there’s a surge in votes for Democrats in rural areas that are traditionally conservative. That could mean that Republicans are voting for Democrats, but past evidence suggests it’s far more likely to just be latent Democrats actually bothering to go out and vote in areas where they’d traditionally get drowned out.

Obama won in 2012. Trump won in 2016. Then a bunch of his voters switched and Biden won in 2020. And then a bunch of his voters switched to Trump in 2024.

It seems inarguable that a critical number of voters are absolutely capable of changing their minds.

What you’re missing is that not the same amount of people voted in all of those elections. 2012 and 2020 had high voter participation, 2016 and 2024 did not. Trump got fewer votes in 2016 than Romney did in 2012. If everyone who voted for Obama in 2012 had also voted for Clinton, Trump never would have won.

Same thing with ‘24, if everyone who voted for Biden in ‘20 had voted for Harris in ‘24, we never would’ve had Trump 2. This is why I think Trump isn’t very popular, he just wins by default when the Dems run a bad campaign or have an uninspiring candidate (side note, I totally think America is ready for a woman president, just not Clinton or Harris specifically)

Turns out »bringing the future to rural America« is a tougher sell when the future arrives as a windowless warehouse guzzling water and electricity while your bills climb. Republicans get the backlash, Democrats get the votes, and both parties get checks from the same tech lobby. Truly bipartisan innovation.

They blame dems, but it seems like they see the less mainstream democrats that are pushing away from the corporate dems as more promising, like there have been a handful of former Trump voters who said they liked Mamdani because he’s doing something different and trying to make things more affordable for average people.

Some Republican operatives called a bunch of voters who flipped from Trump to Mamdani and asked why? And some of them said Mamdani was conservative. The operatives were like no he’s not he’s socialist, to which they said Mamdani was talking about things being affordable, which is a conservative position. These people really are fucking stupid as shit.

Best you can hope for with people that deep in the red mindset is to discourage them from voting. They can’t bring themselves to vote for a “Dumbocrat”, but if they hate their own party’s option enough, they won’t vote for them either, just stay home in miserable despair.

That’s what we have to hope for.

Legitimately, the only time I hear about Dems attacking guns is when there’s a fucking election and Republicans and gun manufacturers claim they’ll take your guns away. I’m still waiting on Obama to take my guns.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but you are deeply out of touch with American gun owners if you think “everyone agrees with” “sensible gun reform.” Lots of gun owners vote purely to maintain the same level of access to guns we have now. They call it voting “straight 2A” and they will never vote for any Democrat because they perceive them as “gun grabbers” who are negotiating in bad faith.

America has so many guns that to do anything about it we need to talk about a serious cultural transformation on a level with “Japan banning people from carrying swords in public” paired with the kind of mutual, transparent disarmament that happens in countries after a civil war. “Sensible gun reform” is an interesting idea because it simultaneously doesn’t go nearly far enough and is also considered way too extreme by many gun owners.

Fair. I do still think that everyone agrees with that because while these people don’t want anyone to touch any rights, they’ll ostensibly agree that “some people” shouldn’t have guns, whether that’s criminals or “criminals” or what have you.

So, in a way, I do think even 2A people agree, they just don’t think that it is either possible (“criminals will just ignore the law” like you can just find guns wherever) or that it’s the intention behind gun control (going after political dissidents).

My statement was more that the gun control that Democrats propose is basically nothing, and that it’s just a fucking wedge issue that also happens to consistently make gun manufacturers money. Are Dems supposed to lie and say letting teachers have guns solves gun violence in schools to appease these fuckers? Like, what the fuck are we talking about here?

With how close our elections typically are, you don’t need to convince every single one, just picking away at the fringes should be enough
