If it’s a public page, you could possibly host shareware games or with other licenses with a similar effect.

And there’s plenty of games you can legally buy as ROMs (e.g. homebrews on Itchio), games that include ROMs in their files (e.g. River City Girls 0 on Steam, most Neo Geo releases on PC platforms and pretty much any MS-DOS game rerelease), and if you’re from a region with laws not as draconian as the DMCA, there are games with ROMs embedded in their files and that can be extracted. So if it’s a private page, you could go for those too.

I use Proton’s VPN.

Issues I’ve observed: timeouts and extra (sometimes excessive) “are you human” verifications, extra step on troubleshootings if a site doesn’t load properly or at all, sites load slower, connection may not even work when it’s morning in Russia and China or if the server is in a country being bombarded (e.g. Iran’s former allies) or possibly also going through some natural disaster, some sites may hardcode your VPN region to your account if you stay in a given IP too much (e.g. Crunchyroll), and some sites block VPN IPs they know about (e.g. Nijimiss.moe, part of the fediverse, and GameFAQS).

If emails can be received through newsletter, maybe Kill the Newsletter could help? It acts as an email to receive newsletter contents, and hosts them as HTML pages.

Also, from my tests, it works decent enough even on Android’s Termux, though a powerful phone seems needed.

LLM shoehorning aside, holy shit, mobile-oriented site designs never fail to negatively impress me. Dunno if it’s the poor use of space, way too many pre-made categories shoved in the sidebar, text elements not being as clearly differentiated making them be ADHD triggers/inducers, or something else, but the beta forum for Stack Overflow feels like it ticks each problem I can think of.

Please give the jank. At least jank is usable, predictable and doesn’t make you feel like you need to take focus drugs/meds.

That’s what I meant about horizontal attacks. Iirc that was the term used in the explanation that convinced me to consider a VPS. 😅

…though I still want stuff locally, so studying this type of network security is still in my roadmap.

First, it needs an initial investment, but maybe buy a Raspberry Pi or some other single-board computer to put your site/sites on?

Second, in a post asking about self-hosting that I made, someone suggested the site https://linuxupskillchallenge.org/, and reading its “what is it about” page, I see the text from the attached image. Perhaps worth investigating.

Checking here, Hollos still needs a site to use as relay, similar to Bluesky, so I’m guessing you’d need to either host the site on your machine, or to use a VPS. I need to study and test it further though.

Not quite the same thing, but maybe run a Hollos instance instead? Yet to test, but supposedly it runs on your phone by what they market.

Also seen two other minimalist projects implementing ActivityPub. Let me see if I can find them.

Linux was born out of manually making drivers to see how hardware works, which after putting enough together, Linus noticed he had a kernel.

Meanwhile, people pushing code they don’t understand are more often than not breaking the programs they “help” with.

I’d suggest studying low level coding to at least be able to audit others’ codes, including LLMs’, let alone to publish comnputer-generated codes.

And dunno where I’d draw the line, but 20k lines imo is a bit past reasonable. How would anyone audit that many in a timely manner? But with the “dev” doing that daily, that’d be hard to even pretend.
