My first cell phone was a flip phone, and I’m not gonna lie, I’ve considered revisiting my teenage days again and getting one. But I feel like, right now, my smartphone use is very light.

I avoid Meta apps, I don’t play mobile games, my biggest vice was reddit which has now become a shithole of bots and censorship so I don’t go on there anymore. I read the news on here, chat a little on Discord, check my birdfeeder and that’s pretty much it besides occasional use of google maps as needed.

On top of that, this phone is from 2018 so it’s battery life these days is not great. I think that helps too.

Maybe for those hesitating to get a dumb phone, perhaps start with an older smartphone to whittle your time down?

Does this law apply to all social media/social media-type sites, or only social media websites under the umbrella of the NetChoice group?

The articles on this are all frustratingly vague. Bluesky is not under NetChoice so I assume all social media sites will eventually be blocking MS IPs?

Yeah, my bfs dad is constantly filling his house, garage, and yard with a bunch of crap that he’ll never use. It just sits there and gets forgotten and deteriorates. Took us 6 years but we got like 90% of what he was storing out of our house too.

I mean I wasn’t going around accusing everyone of being a bot or thinking that I was right all the time. I did have a few false positives and owned up to it. But once you see the pattern of behavior (big gap on joined date vs first active date, only posting in karma farming subs or subs known to have high bot populations) and accounts literally keeping the “as a large language model…” Or “Okay, here’s a supportive Reddit-style comment with some minor spelling mistakes…” in some of their comments, ads at the end of their comments, and posting all hours of the day without any gaps for sleep or work, or posting fragments comments identical to ones posted months or years earlier by someone else, you start to realize maybe these accounts might not be genuine.

I have screenshots to prove it but if you really believe I don’t know what I’m talking about then there’s really nothing I can say to dissuade that.

I’d gotten really good at discerning a chatGPT bot from a human account just from years of catching bots on Reddit.

There’s a lot of red flags and tells that would be very hard to completely eradicate. There will always be an uncanny valley.
