The fact is that a lot of the opposition to slavery came from Northern capitalists who were mad they couldn’t have slaves in their factories. Other opponents were tradesmen who couldn’t compete with the slaveowners who rented out their slave carpenters and blacksmiths.

One of the things that the writer predicted was Mr. & Mrs. Everywhere, a gimmick where your TV would insert your family into advertisements.

[off topic?] When William Gibson was researching ‘Neuromancer’ he spent a lot of time hanging out with hackers. They’d tell stories and he’d catch about a quarter of what they were talking about.

When it came to write the book he decided that he’d make the book like that, the reader would have to push though a lot of things that didn’t make sense until they acquired more information.

One of my all time favorite political novels is ‘The Porkchoppers’ by Ross Thomas. It’s about a Union election in the Nixon Era. At one point one of the candidates holds a rally; to get more people to attend they hold a raffle. Surprise, the winner of the new boat is the cousin of one of the insiders.

Sorcerer is a remake of the original. There are a lot of changes. Both films stand the test of time.
