Meh, where I live few people smoke, but I still see people that smoke every other day. There’s still cig butts everywhere. I was hiking in the forest and this dude walking his dog was smoking, I saw him flick his butt right into the nature he was enjoying. And the number of people vaping is huge, even very young folk who walk around with vapes.

I was in France recently and everyone smoked there, it was like going back in time 20 years. Ashtrays everywhere, everything stank and people were chain smoking non stop.

Just because something has gotten less popular locally, doesn’t mean an entire generation has given it up. It’s just a fad not to smoke cigarettes right now, a fad that might change in the future, given how addictive it is.

Yeah except this is a tiny little plane and a 737 is huge. So those comparisons don’t make much sense.

My brother has a self cleaning one. It doesn’t just vacuum, it also has builtin water and cleaning solution to mop the floors. It goes into a base station and gets it’s dirty water cleaned out and is rinsed out as well as charged.

He had it for a couple of weeks and showed it to me. I asked how often do you need to clean the base station. Like replace the water, add new cleaning solution, clean it out etc. He said he didn’t know and hadn’t done that once.

So we checked the manual, yeah you were supposed to replace the water and cleaning solution daily and clean the inside of the tank. You also should manually clean the robot at least once every three days, preferably every day. So who knows what was growing inside that machine, getting spread out across the floors every day.

I think I’ll stick to manually cleaning for at least the foreseeable future.

That’s one of the things that frustrates me most about this whole AI thing. I fucking hate it and I want it to die, I wish it were never created in the first place. But from a tech enthusiast and a maths nerd point of view, it is super interesting.

Like the performance of these models is shit compared to a real person doing actual work. But if we think about what we are doing on a basic level, the performance is way beyond what I would expect it to be. I wouldn’t expect it to be able to form a coherent sentence or scale as well as it does (even though the resources required to run these is still very high).

It could have been really cool shit people did studies on and played around with to explore the math. Cool little play models we could let go on a bunch of data and see what it did and how. Something for a small group of nerds and experts who are into that kind of thing, for the sake of learning and nothing else.

But no, somehow it got transmorphed into “AI”. And marketed like this actual learning almost sentient computer system that can replace all workers. You can ask it anything and it will give PhD level expert answers. Oh and it’s run by a handful of the most vile men imaginable who pour all of the world’s money and resources into it, all so they get to be god emperor of the world. Fucking terrible.

It’s so misleading how these AI products are marketed as all knowing super smart knowledge sources. While in reality, even if they don’t hallucinate bullshit, it’s trained on the internet mostly. So at best these things have the knowledge of an average Reddit poster. What does an average Reddit shit poster know about farming? Jack shit…

Yeah but what if Germany were to be hit by a 9.1 earthquake followed by a huge tsunami and have the disaster cause the need for emergency generators that were flooded by the tsunami? We can’t have that risk! Shutting down all nuclear reactors was the only option.

Even if it were all above board, it’s just gambling and should be heavily restricted just as all other forms of betting.

Or the economy crashes by AI replacing everyone and doing an absolute terrible job, causing stuff like supply chain collapse and communication/power outages.

I have yet to see someone explain how this whole thing actually works out. Just a dozen different scenarios that turn out terrible for almost everyone. The only scenario that works out is if a handful of people like Altman absolutely rule the world, become de facto dictators as they are the ones that control the few AI companies that run everything. And by work out, I mean it works out for that handful of people. For the rest of the world it’s probably just about the worst case scenario. But you just know it’s the scenario scammy Altman is hoping for.

I think you have to differentiate between simple pressure waves or even shockwaves and soundwaves.

Like Michal said, usually something is only defined as sound if there is something to hear/interpret that sound. Otherwise it’s just waves in a medium, like any other kind of wave. What we humans consider sound and what a whale or a dog considers sound is not the same.

For the most part the beginning of the universe was very hot. Sure there was fluid dynamics going on, but would we consider that loud? Or just very hot?

As for the reason something essentially random had structure is very interesting, but I don’t think fluid dynamics or soundwaves had anything to do with it.

Well when they said the Pentagon was using AI to help coordinate the attacks on Iran, I simply assumed it was some expert system with a machine learning component. But no, it turns out they were using Grok, an actual LLM chatbot. Which is fucking crazy.

So sometimes the assumption goes the other way as well.

Back in the day computer parts were super expensive.

I once bought 4MB of memory for around $300, which would be around $900 dollar in today’s money. Before it became a mass-consumer product and economies of scale kicked in, having your own computer was a huge investment. It was more of a business thing back then, with prices higher than today still.

When they said they are using AI I thought it was like a lot of scientists and engineers use “AI”. Like some sort of expert system with a neural network somewhere in the guts. Some math thing that gets labeled as AI to keep the funding going.

But they are actually using Grok. An LLM. A bullshit generation machine.

They are actually going “@grok Where do we bomb the brown people?”

That’s fucking batshit insane. They don’t actually think that it is an AI right? They don’t actually think it can reason or think at all? Or solve problems? Or any of the things that would actually be useful, instead of simply generating the next most probable piece of bullshit in a long line of never ending bullshit.

This world is actually fucking insane. The amount of brain washing going on when it comes to AI is wild.

Which is impressive because it still sucks balls. Especially when it misses items, so you need to dig through folders to find the item. Only for the subject to have the exact word you searched for and it somehow didn’t show up.

Plus the annoying top results and search results being mixed in the same view. Either just sort by time or by relevance. Don’t go mixing them together into a messy results view that’s hard to use.

They’ve calmed down a bit with it now, but there was this phase where they had those small little popups all over the place whenever they changed stuff or added something new. Sometimes even two or three of them you needed to clear just to do the damn job you booted up the infernal program for in the first place. It would drive me insane. Especially when there was something actually worth looking at, but I need to do my job first. But in order to use the tool, you needed to close those popups and once you did they were gone forever. So good job remember what it was and how to find it. Such awful UX design.

Tho Plex recently did a full screen wizard to show off their new “Discussion” feature. A feature I do not want and will never use. But I was still required to go through the slide deck on each of my devices before I could use the app again. UX is really an art and in my experience kind of a lost art for the most part these days.
