Oh, that reminds me someone I banned some months ago. It went like this:

OP shared some on-topic but borderline NSFW content, in a comm I mod. I requested (not demanded; just requested) OP to use the NSFW tag, so people (incl. me) could go wild discussing it, without making others uncomfortable. OP did it just fine, no issue, I know that poster and they’re a fairly reasonable person.

Then a second user started stirring shit up about my request. Their complain was TL;DR “I assume you’re overly sensitive, grow a thick skin” and using an ableist slur as a slur, in a way that targets a marginalised group. I gave them a 3d ban. Just three days, as it was first offence… and because if you give this sort of user enough rope, they’ll quickly find a way to ban themselves.

Bingo. And as soon as I banned them, they started DM’ing me. Ban elevated to permaban, messages reported, and admins eventually banned them. :-)

Anyway. Fediverse. Prime example on how “I can do it” should not be confused with “I should do it”. Because, sure, technically you’re talking about the series, so it isn’t off-topic, and most comms wouldn’t have rules against this (it would screw discussion); but still in poor taste, you know?

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. With enough broken clocks disagreeing with each other, the odds at least one is right are close to 100%. Only a fool would listen to any, though.

Most people out there don’t know how IRC and the Usenet work. So even if this analogy is more accurate, it’s less useful.

In the meantime most people on the internet use email.

To be honest? For me it’s the fun type of broken-and-hilarious. Once I got used to the Fediverse, most of the things I could complain about it are found in the equivalent closed platforms.

Still trying to find a good replacement. The original poem conveys “fight for groups you don’t belong to, because their enemies will also go after you”; I want the subversion to be something like “don’t fight for your enemies”, or perhaps “don’t fight against people fighting for you”.

But yes, you’re right. I think oppression is like weeds in a garden: if you’re diligent, the fight against it becomes easier over time, as you’re preventing the oppression/weeds from creating more of itself. But once you stop fighting, it sprouts out of nowhere, ready to reproduce and take your society/garden over again.

Learn to phrase things without disingenuously putting words into the others’ mouths dammit. This is not Reddit, behave like a decent person instead of a redditor. Nothing the other user said can be even remotely interpreted as “the energy cost is justified”, in fact they didn’t even talk about resource consumption.
