The first tunnel element of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel was immersed on the Danish side this week marking a key construction milestone in the long-running effort to create a fixed link between continental Europe and Scandinavia.

That is great news. Hopefully the Germans hurry up with upgrading the rail and road connection between Hamburg and the tunnel.
Isn’t the long side of each segment meant to be parallel to the shore? I thought that the wide side was the one that had the tunnel openings.
Those segments are 217m x 47m. The tunnel is not that wide.
