It’s everyone’s base nature, and why it takes a constant fight against it.
“Us versus them” is deeper than humans, it’s all mammals. Hell even social insects exhibit it, I’m just not sure if it’s convergent evolution or really that basic an instinct.
It takes very very little for humans to treat demographics as “us”, even just watching Sesame Street has a proven and significant effect.
Like, that and other “woke programming” is pretty much the opposite of lead exposure. Humans need socialized like every other mammal and if we’re not, if we’re raised to think of certain demographics as even less, as subhuman “others”…
We get shit like this.
We can’t “erase” it and then stop worrying about it. Because all it takes is 20 years of an isolated population for people to think everyone outside the in-group isn’t even really human.
It takes a lot longer than 10,000 years of civilization to breed out millions of years of evolutionary pressure.
That’s why we see it mostly with religious extremists who isolate, and people from area where segregation was enforced legally or extrajudicially. And why people started “waking up” around 20 years after Sesame Street and other integrated television started in the 70s.
“Them” forms later, and is literally everyone that didn’t make the cut for “us” because they weren’t exposed to that group. That’s why babies and toddler are so interested in anyone new, they’re soaking up every aspect of that person and cataloging every new thing as now “us”. That goes a lot deeper than just coloration too, and even explains why slightly older school aged kids bully anyone different. They might be 12 years old but their idea of “them” has been solidified.
It’s why school integration went better with 6 year olds than 18 year olds.

On the contrary, I think “them” is a taught idea. Babies aren’t racist at all.
Right…
Because in group/out group is still forming…
Everyone they see is “us”.

That is teaching
No, it is the absence of socializing.
Like, if an adult doesn’t know how to ride a bike because they never learned, you wouldn’t say “they were taught to not ride a bike”.
I mean you would, but people would probably put a couple attempts in to help you understand before just walking away
