The Tomahawk Block IV (Tactical Tomahawk) added an in-flight camera system that lets it send back battle-damage images before impact, and the missile can even be redirected to a new target or loitering point mid-flight via satellite link. So it’s not a passive “fire and forget” weapon in the way older versions were.

“You see everyone, it wasn’t an evil action that we did to terrorize a group of people”

They even refer to it in this article as a “military targeting error” no. This is propaganda.

The US has been bombing civilians with absolute impunity for decades. This has nothing to do with AI and everything to do with the United States’ repeatedly demonstrated and absolute disregard for human life.

It has been pretty obvious for those in power in the US that there is zero accountability ever since George Bush Junior didn’t end up in The Hague for the invasion of Iraq and subsequent Pillaging (the War Crime, as shown in the British Report On The Iraq War)

Yes, that’s the touchstone for my generation, but American lawlessness goes back to the invasion of the Philipines. but CIA and military actions during the cold war are especially egregious.

How is kidnapping Maduro substantially different than overthrowing Noriega?

What I love about Trump is that he is simply America without the mask. It’s frustrating listening to people weeping into their flags saying, “This isn’t who we are.” It’s exactly who we are. It’s exactly who we’ve always been.

Probably a well trained military crewman who knows how to follow orders from the guys up top who should have already done the vetting of the information. Can’t fault them.

Yeah, if you’re a trigger puller you assume you’ve been assigned legitimate military targets. When the “sights” you’re aiming down are an ISR feed from a satellite, drone or just GPS coordinates, it can be difficult to verify the building you’ve locked is a school or headquarters of something. Complicated by the pace of attack this administration demanded.

I suspect that everyone in here complaining about AI didn’t actually read the article.

The article states that Palantir’s Maven system was over-relied on, and compressed a process that would have taken months into one that took days, but it also points out that that Maven didn’t actually make a mistake based on the way it was supposed to operate.

It sounds like some military personnel were mistaken in how much vetting and revetting maven itself would do, but the article also lays much of the blame at Hegseth’s gutting of the civilian harm roles, and failures in intelligence vetting and gathering that fed into maven in the first place. Years ago US intelligence personnel had flagged that Minab had turned into a school, but that information was not in the database used by maven.

Like I have no doubt that Maven is part of the problem, but it sounds like it was far from the only part.

It wasn’t a mistake. Maven wasn’t over relied upon, there were no failures in vetting. They don’t care. The people who would care have been removed.

To kill a bunch of innocent children… It’s monstrous. The minds of those who would perpetrate such an act are stained with an evil so dark it sickens the average man.

Humans can be terrible, terrible, creatures.

So who is ultimately responsible? AI isn’t something like an unfortunate mechanical failure (though even than someone bears responsibility). If the government is using AI for targeting military attacks, it sure better understand every single risk associated and be ready to swallow every ounce of responsibility. You don’t get to say “AI messed up, oops” and move on. You told the machine what to do, so you’re responsible. Every one of those school girls’ blood is on your hands.

      So who is ultimately responsible?

I’d say the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces. So, a felon rapist pedophile.

Meh, I was having an argument with a coworker recently about AI’s evils, and all the doomsayers and apoca-hype profiteering that the big AI companies do. I think this article lays out more plainly what the risks of AI are in terms of ending the human race, than any of the claude-cult stock pumpers that come forward.

It won’t be some AGI super intelligence that ascends and then does away with humanity. It’ll be some random military sorts who get a prompt, and trigger a huge conflict / disaster based on bullshit fed to them from an AI. The AI won’t even do it ‘intentionally’, it’ll just be a convincing enough marionette’s lie, fed to a low enough IQ, to open fire.

Can you imagine not even bothering to plan your first strike on a country that your military has deemed too powerful to attack for some time?

Can you imagine abandoning your old planning techniques for a totally novel technique and getting the exact same results of bombing civilians directly?

Can you imagine claiming it was a targeting error and then double tapping it?

    This is incredible reporting
