I read the article but I’m still confused as to why anyone would want to smuggle ants.

This. You can make a small fortune, especially if you are the only supplier. This guy was an idiot tho, dont ruin it for everyone else and screw over a species by taking all the queens from a location.
There’s a huge pet trade for ants. Really big hobby.
