By a vote of 62 to 48, Israel’s Knesset approved a law Monday enshrining the death penalty as the default punishment for Palestinians who carry out an “act of terrorism” on citizens of Israel. The law does not apply to the state-backed terrorism of far-right Zionist settlers, who routinely assault and kill Palestinians in the illegally occupied West Bank.

Anyone who deliberately kills a person with the intent of “negating the existence of the state of Israel” is to be executed by hanging. The law restricts access to legal counsel for the accused in Israel’s civil courts and grants immunity to all persons involved in carrying out such state executions.

For the system of military courts established by the Zionist regime in the West Bank, under which only Palestinian residents fall, execution by hanging will be the standard punishment for “acts of terrorism,” even without a prosecutorial request. Such executions must be carried out within 90 days. The only power given to the courts in this setting is to impose a life sentence in “exceptional circumstances.” Given how rampant torture and other forms of abuse in Israel’s prison system are, such a decision would in many instances amount to a death sentence by other means.

I wonder what the law abiding Israeli citizens are doing by reading this.

How long till they claim they knew nothing?

I’d worry about those Israeli ‘law abiders’ with about 10-18% of your concern.

82% of Israelis want to ethnic cleanse every Palestinian out of “Israel” regardless of innocence. And many of that tiny minority probably also want the outcome but dont want to admit to wanting it. I suppose I’m happy its not 100% but I dont have a lot of time for the concerns of any society thats that sick. By way of comparison, Israelis make the American political system seem like a principled utopia.

There needs to be pushback against all of Israel’s policies, and I’m afraid that has to take the form of blockading and boycotting all of Israel, not 82% of it, and not allowing travel visas or trade for all israelis, rather than trying to figure out who is in the 18%. Theres no other realistic way to push back. It’ll have to happen to America as well I’m afraid. Assuming theres any free world left to take this action.

How long till they claim they knew nothing?

As soon as someone stops them from doing it.

And “terrorism” is resisting settlers trying to murder them in order to take their houses and land.

It is fitting that the law was presented to parliament by the fascist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who described the measure as the most important piece of legislation in decades and toasted its passage with a glass of champagne. He and his fellow celebrants wore a lapel pin in the shape of a noose, to celebrate the hangings to come.

    They got lynching badges made

I heard somebody else here refer to Israel as depraved the other day in response to an Israeli business owner using a prisoner video to advertise their business. I thought it was a bit harsh, but they really are turning out to be a country of monsters. The US and Europe should cut all ties and throw them to the wolves. I am sure most of the world thinks of Israel and the US as interchangeable anyway. It feels like there is a cradle to grave culture of viciousness there that doesn’t exist in Europe or the US (or at least didn’t used to).

Conservatives believe that a terrorist is a race, or at least a kind of person. A person who does terrorism is only a terrorist if they oppose the goal of the violence.

I can think of several terrorists that I support. But not by pretending that they were good and peaceful people.

Of course, if you agree with the goal they’re a righteous freedom fighter.

Language is a powerful thing, propaganda works, and history is written by the victors.

There is no other word for it than barbaric. This country should be internationally isolated for the heinous atrocities it commits. It is yet another reminder that we must also sever ties with the US, because they have been enabling Israel’s crimes for decades - and now their own fascist regime are even actively participating with their own heinous war crimes. Fuck Israel, fuck the US, and all their accomplices.
