I’m sure the usual suspects will claim it’s once again baseless Western imperialist propaganda.

But it’s not the first time I’ve heard of this. Last week’s news of malnutried Ukrainian soldiers was a big scandal. For Russian soldiers it was yet another Tuesday. And I can actually understand utter desperation when you’re starving. What I cannot understand why they’re not eating their commanders instead and then go home.

Well, it is propaganda. Selectively amplifying the truth is one way of doing that.

It’s good to recognize it even if you agreee with the underlying cause.

I’ve heard of soldiers cooking a human head from a work colleague who was hanging out on Discord or some Steam chat with Russians (he’s learning the language, not for political reasons) and they shared a video or photo of that scene as a form of macabre entertainment. So I don’t think the report amplified anything here.

I don’t claim to have any proof that it’s fake or anything, but it’s pretty reasonable to be suspicious of stories of cannibalism. It’s exactly the kind of thing you hear from trash tabloids and it’s pretty much never true, humans generally just don’t like to eat each other. It has obviously existed throughout history to various extents, but it’s pretty fucking rare. Much rarer than, indeed, Western stories about “primitive” people used to dehumanise them. So like yeah, gonna need some real proof to believe such a wild claim, not just “hearing it more than once”.

That’s not evidence and neither is some third hand ghost story from discord. Seriously. This just doesn’t stand up to critical thinking, the only way to believe this with the available information is if you really want to believe anything bad you hear about Russians no matter how outlandish. I’m sure the Russian media is saying those starving Ukrainians are eating each other too, but despite their clear desperation in the stories recently there were no claims of that, and I don’t expect that it happened. Likewise here.
