If timers on the bios aren’t an option, look for the settings to power on after power outage. If you turn it on, you can use a standard timer plug to turn the power on and off.

If you hold the number it can’t get recycled into distribution. Signal does fall back to MFA codes over SMS from memory (I’ve recovered the signal account for my grandma, as I own the number), so anyone who controls the number controls the account.

I understand, I’m where I’m at by chance, and I wouldnt want to try a different path either. I did go down the robotics/compsci path, but didn’t end up in either of those fields, so you never know how things will end up.

I’m more thinking along the lines of getting a cheap sim, signing up for signal and them letting the plan lapse and the number is released for use again. And then someone buys a new plan, but gets the recycled number. Not sure how realistic that is as a risk vector though.

This is definitely a shower thought. Good news, at 24 there is plenty of time to backtrack and reroute.
I’m a bit similar, I am only in my current career because I responded to an job ad email that was later rescinded.

Charitable explanation: by allowing people to use WhatsApp/signal etc without holding onto the sim card, it opens them up to risk that someone else gains control of the phone number, and can then take over that account.
But that doesnt really require that the number stays in the same phone, just under the same persons control. Periodic SMS code check-in would be sufficient.

I usually do the later when it happens to me.

Chill out, I explicitly said that bars should be appropriately cutting people off. That would be long before they are drunk. If they can’t do that, they lose their licencing and ability to sell alcohol.
Fortunately, drunks at home have never hurt themselves or their families. /s
I dont drink at all, so you can keep your assumptions about my social life to yourself.
And no one is talking about peer pressuring others to drink, where did you get that idea from?

You can get breathalysers that use straws for mouth pieces. I think they are used in workplaces (mines etc)?
But ideally, much better to have proper infrastructure alternatives. 0.05 is the legal limit, its not the same as the “safe” level.

Good point. No easy answers :(

Tbh, I’m in the same boat. But government inflicted alcohol price rises are already happening in many places, so maybe it could be tweaked to help.

Bars could be required to have cheap booze in order to keep their licences. But heinekin owning the establishment is a bit of a conflict of interest there.

If allowing problem drinking could cause the alcohol service licence to be revoked (therefore no more cheap booze), perhaps pubs would be incentivised to prevent problem drinking. Requires a working regulatory environment though.

Very true. I’d like to beleive establishments are cutting people off and taking active steps to prevent drink driving, but thats definitely naive.

Here is a thought, feel free to shoot it down:
Many governments are jacking up prices on alcohol, for the obvious health detriments. Instead of doing it across the board, they could make take home alcohol cost significantly more, but bar/pub/restaurant alcohol significantly cheaper, on the understanding that its a lot harder to problem drink in a public place with a bartender who will cut you off.
It would encourage moderated drinking in social places, discourage excessive home drinking. Doesnt completely solve the health issues though.

QR would be convenient enough
My friend, that is not convenient. Phone numbers need to be memorable, and need to be transmittable offline without relying on technology. Old people use phones…

This isnt about protecting kids, its about age verifying and de-anonymising everyone. Australia has already gone down this road, dont fall for the trap.

Doing the /service_name thing can get really messy if the web service has non-relative links. It gets very messy trying to do rewrite rules to fix that. Wouldnt recommend it.

So, you want to have two services accessible via the same URL? How do you want that to work? Can you give a list of services and the URLs you would like to access them by?
At least for mail, its actually not too hard, because SMTP/POP etc are all on different ports, so you can host your mail at mysite.com, and still have a website at the same address.
Those are rookie numbers, mine are definitely yellowing and cracking :(
