Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app?English
0·3 months agoFive years ago, a open-source project I worked on moved to Zulip (from Slack) and it was a small hurdle. But after a month, I really like it!
So much that I’ve pushed a few other open source projects (who lived on Discord).
I was really surprised when I started a new job two years ago and THEY used a self-hosted Zulip. It’s everything Im used to on Slack.
Discord has team speak/video sharing, which I don’t think Zulip has. But then again, we use something else for video calls.

I only use it for text chat, so I’m curious.

0·3 months agoIt does lead to slippery slopes. First, it’s to block “adult content”.
Then, they’ll consider certain topics “adult”. News about current events? LGBT content? Video games with some violence in it?
Facebook is an example of this slippery slope. And for parts of the country, they do need to scan an ID.

At tech events and meetups, I’m showing them Linux.
When my friends come over, I show them my self hosted solutions on a Linux.
At work, where we use Macs, we talk about open-source, including Linux.

0·4 months agoWhat does age verification mean for VPNs?
Because if I’m using a VPN using a UK server and I get any issues, I can switch to Spain, or Italy, or Zimbabwe or whatever. Is that not the case?

0·4 months agoThe court order, which was previously reported by TorrentFreak, was issued by Judge Michael Watson in US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. “Plaintiff has established that Defendant crashed its website, slowed it, and damaged the servers, and Defendant admitted to the same by way of default,” the ruling said.
US court. Where is Anna’s Archive located?
Because with the state of America right now, every country should be giving the US Courts the finger. We’re pretty much a rogue nation now.

Real question - how does one host a Lemmy that accepts all sorts of content without having to keep constant tabs on it?
Like, if we did sprinkle nsfw content throughout dozens of Lemmy servers?
I’m asking this because I hosted a pixelfed server one time, allowed thousand users, and those abuse reports became hard on my soul. Some were pretty vanilla nsfw. But some required me to forward it to 3-letter agencies in the States. And while I’m not a fan of talking to the cops, I’m also not a fan of awful shit on my server.
