  • Sensationalism.

    • The woman had a car-sick two year old on her lap in the driving seat.
    • The woman was still driving the car herself.
    • The toddler was not steering the vehicle even if they had their hands on the steering wheel.
    • The woman was not driving fast. They were just driving to a fast-food restaurant.
    • The woman was not driving to the fast food restaurant because the kid was sick.
    • The woman was texting and driving.

So there’s really two egregious things here only:

    • child not in their seat
    • texting while driving

Based on the headline and first paragraph I was imagining a scenario where the toddler was driving the car with auto-pilot on while the woman was on her phone playing Balatro.

Edit: re-reading the German article, she was indeed driving to a fast food restaurant because the kid didn’t feel well. Understandable though. Döner withdrawal symptoms are life threatening.

  • It’s different in Europe. When they say “rural”, they mean any small town not adjacent to a city or other conurbation.

The density of small towns that have hundreds of years of history but are only 5-10km apart from the next 3-4 towns surrounding it are in a stark contrast to the 20-50km distances between North American towns. And rural farms are relatively rare. Farmers generally still live in the small town and then drive their tractor out to the fields.

  • As someone who’s been to a few:

    • Vienna - very popular, very commercial but beautiful
    • Budapest - beautiful, but most people just go to Vienna instead, even Hungarians
    • Szeged - nothing to write home about
    • Debrecen - nothing to write home about
    • Pécs - beautiful
    • Zagreb - beautiful scenery and location
    • Hamburg - nothing to write home about, but I’ve been to it in over a decade
    • Leipzig - I did not like it, but it was the whole city
    • Krakow - holy shit this place is gorgeous, but I’m willing to bet it got commercialized a lot in recent years. I’d be willing to give it a another go.
    • Brno - this place is an absolute banger. The main square is closed to traffic except for the rickety festive tram going through during waning daylight hours. But as soon as the sun sets, it’s a non-stop party of going from one Most bodega to the next with your reusable mug.

  • The US is a low bar sadly. I’m comparing it to Canada, Germany or Hungary primarily, as those are the countries that I have lived in.

I don’t think Ireland has free preschool. Or rather, not enough coverage of it. One of my friends was really struggling with this, as they were not able to resume their career until their kid turned 2 and they’ve found an early childhood education centre.

It’s also devoid of any sort of comprehensive rail or other transit systems outside of Dublin. It’s very car centric, meaning your children will depend on you to ferry them around between locations until they can drive a car by themselves.

Canada is very similar in most of these aspects. Except for Québec maybe.
