We have reached the point where companies are willing to lose a small number of privacy-oriented users in exchange for detailed data about the rest. I am already running into sites that are not fully functional from a privacy-oriented browser. (For instance, I can no longer see prices or make pledges on Kickstarter when using LibreWolf.) That will get worse, but I also expect some sites to break with Google and Microsoft so they can continue to serve (and make money from) the larger group. It will be interesting to see how it settles out.

In the interest of fairness, I have to post an update. Kickstarter had not done anything about the problem for a while, so I stopped using it. I just discovered today that they actually did fix it.

Meanwhile I get all sorts of password reset and MFA calls/texts/emails/notifications from people trying to break into my account in countries that I have never been to and are nowhere near me.

    Cool cool

I’ve seen hCaptcha and other things just let people solve things by dragging stuff with the mouse. I bet those are much more reliable at detecting real people without having to resort to such deep invasion of privacy. Fuck Goofle.

“For users with accessibility needs who cannot use hand gestures to complete the challenge, reCAPTCHA continues to provide visual and audio challenges, and develop more accessible and secure alternatives”

    So what’s the point?

Are you new? That option will eventually go away. Especially for people who cannot confirm that they need it.

Instead of coming up with a better way to do all this, they’ll spend that time and money coming up with a way to confirm that people are actually blind and actually need the alternative method.

Just go ahead and give us access to your medical records to confirm. We promise to use this information in a completely normal way, and will certainly not abuse it at all. We can be trusted with your data.

      Speed/convenience.

It’s like phones people use their thumb or face to unlock even though that’s objectively less secure than a good password.

I feel like this is a slow boil eventually they will make it mandatory that you need to have your fave scanned.

It’s worth mentioning by 2027 all new vehicles have to have facial scanners installed and they watch you 247.

No worries. Just send a photo of your passport, a bank statement proving your residence, and your telephone number that is connected to your personal identity by law (which it is in almost every country now).

We are not fighting hard enough.

The videos are not associated with a particular user and are deleted after they are verified.

They will use this for ads as well ( eventually) you will have to watch them to use any of their services unless you pay.
