After nokia N9 I got the Jolla phone. Then the Jolla C. Eventually as Jolla was struggling at the time my work e-mails did not work etc.
I had to make a choice between pest and cholera.
I chose apple as it was more privacy oriented at least in talks.
But if that “promise” flies also out of window…then what?
Does a phone that one can truly own and also works in corporate setting (sideload intune in a separate container) exists? Something that works with as litlle as possible tuning to make it work? Something that our IT department approves? Banking apps need to work.
I’m open for suggestions nevertheless I feel like we are prisoners in some sense.

Backflip seems like a stretch from what the article says. But when Googles policies have me seriously considering if avoiding the walled garden was worth it, its a pretty unfortunate slip that says a lot about what Apple’s leadership is thinking.

The Google garden has its own walls now, doesn’t it? Aren’t they preventing side loading of apps now (or soon)? I’m not sure what other walls do or don’t exist at this point.
I have an Android phone, and I like Android better than Apple, but these days I’m struggling to see much difference between the two brands.

- Try mounting an SMB share on macOS. Soo different vs just being able to do it on Windows/Linux and also mounting the subfolder instead of the top-level dir.

SMB: I haven’t used a recent version of MacOS, but we were able to do it pretty easily on my wife’s 2017ish MacBook, which we just replaced because Apple wasn’t supporting it any more. But I do use SMB on my Android tablet (and occasionally phone) to access my Linux server. Is that possible on ios?

Same here. The hardware is not bad but oh boy is the software the biggest pile of shit I’ve ever had to use. And I want to use my librem 5 (linux) phone but you need a stack of pokemon cards as batteries if you want it to last a day. They really should sell a charging deck for spare batteries so you can hot swap them.

I don’t like Apple. I find their UI to be hard to use and counter-intuitive. Their walled garden / vendor lock-in is a model of monopoly behavior that is terrible.
However, unlike most other US tech giants when you use their stuff you are the customer, not the product. It is in Apple’s interest to keep their customers happy.
So on one hand it is surprising that they would upset their customers like this.
However, capitalism dictates that if their is also a chance of making money by making you both the customer and the product, Apple has to take it.
So on the other hand completely unsurprising. 😅

as a public company, it was bound to happen. shareholders ultimately come before the customer. Just because they weren’t the product, doesn’t mean apple actually cares about the consumer
