Fried chicken from the supermarket deli is affordable. $16 for 12 pieces of dark meat. Enough to give me at least two meals, probably three.

    Responsible adulting, requires fried chicken.

Every time the family orders out trays of wings, I can’t help myself from commenting “what a lovely tray of death!”, pointing out that it cost one chicken for every four “wings” (two drummets and two flats) . It doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves where food comes from and to be appreciative and grateful for their sustenance.

There’s always leftovers too, which I hate going to waste. Very easy to incorporate into other foods (fried rice, soup, salads, etc).

Meat processing plants aren’t wasting the chickens.

For every 4 “wings” there are two breast and two thighs going into their own separate packs, the rest of the carcass gets boiled, the cooked meat on the carcass goes to shredded cooked chicken, the broth from the cooking process goes to be sold or dried into Bouillon cubes. The bones likely go to a secondary market.

I never said anything about wasting other parts of chickens. I was referring to leftover wings going uneaten and going to waste. Incorporating the chicken meat from the wings into other dishes I’m quite good at.

That’s why I only eat them twice a week.

I know it’s not the healthiest of the foods but being Finnish chicken it’s at least not seasoned with literal poison and considering that I airfry them it’s at least better than deepfryed. Let me have my wings and comforting lies. Cooking and eating is such a struggle for me.

I don’t get the appeal of chicken wings. The amount of work involved vs the meat payout is way lopsided.

      • protein
      • crispy crunchy
      • flavourful (whether from being nicely cooked or from all the optional extra stuff)
      • takes some time to eat, slowing me down (so I don’t overeat as easily, and can sit down and actually watch the game recap without finishing 20% of the way through)

also, chicken wings come in sizes from “this looks like it was a baby” to “there is no way this chicken was healthy before slaughter”

I like a good midsize crispy wing with spices and just a dab of sauce.

      eating slop bowls gets boring

I never understood the difficulty argument. It’s not like these people would be open to just slamming a glass of Soylent because it’s easy.

Funny you mention that. I absolutely went through a DIY Soylent phase, but I was playing around with the recipe(s) via nutrition tracker apps, aiming to hit targets via “real” foods, not supplements, and aiming for “different” recipes. It’s actually not as difficult as you might expect, and I don’t even mind eating the same meal for a good chunk of my meals, but it just… didn’t… work… Maybe it’s the lack of chewing?

I was still “hungry”. I was definitely getting calories, macros, etc., but I think it being in liquid form, no chewing, meant that some of the biological processes weren’t getting the expected feedback.

      The same with drum sticks!

Cooking is supposed to be the difficult part and once I sit down to eat I don’t want to work for the food any more! Just let me eat it.

Sometimes it’s not all about how easy it is to eat something. Sometimes if something tastes good enough, I’m willing to put in the smallest amount of effort.

Every time I’ve had it I taste whatever was put on it, zero chicken taste. At that point you may as well just make little dumplings with batter and the seasonings and keep it boneless.

That’s on the wings you choose.

If you have a Publix within range, for example, their “naked wings” are quite tasty. While they do season them lightly with salt and some sort of spice, they’re basically just fried wings, but very tasty.

Well the appeal basically boils down to they’re fucking delicious; particularly when compared to other chicken parts seasoned in the same way.

Your focus on the meat of it all is probably your downfall. Fat brings the flavor and chicken skin is packed with it. Wings, far and away have the best skin to meat ratio of all the chicken parts.

Hold onto the side of the flat with the knuckle cartilage and twist the small bone and pull it out, now you can mouth the whole flat and pull the meat from a single bone or if you twist and pull the bigger bone out you can eat the thing whole except the cartilage.

It is still a lot of work vs reward but the crispness of the skin and sauce holding ability make them worthwhile.

I can absolutely destroy a plate of wings in like just a couple minutes using this technique and my reckless abandon for devouring cartilage. This is just basically a skill issue

I remember saying to my roommate at the time, 30+ years ago, something like, “I can just buy and eat cake whenever I want. What the hell?”

This was just before my realization that pie is superior to cake in every way.

pie is superior to cake in every way.

For me, that depends. I have had both shitty cakes and shitty pies. The cake needs to avoid butter cream or frosting in favour of whipped cream, and the pie needs to NOT be mostly sugar in the filling/topping.

I’ve had a sweet tooth since childhood, and the only foods which have ever turned that sweet tooth against me (in terms of having an expected sugar presence) have been both pies and cakes.

Why would you eat cake without butter creme frosting? That’s the entire point of cake. Hand me a piece of cake with WHIPPED CREAM, and I’m gonna, gonna, gonna…well, I’m gonna eat it, but I’d rather have buttercream frosting.

Why would you eat cake without butter creme frosting?

I know you’re just ribbing me, but if I may be neurodivergently serious - despite having an unrelenting sweet tooth, it comes down to two things:

          1. Too heavy
          2. Too sweet

Either one by itself is okay, the two together is just a major hell naw.

The heaviness is also why I am not a fan of most cheesecakes. A super-light one, fine. But I frequently cannot finish most slices of cheesecake unless they’re particularly narrow slices, far thinner than usual.

reminds me of the saying - the difference between wisdom and knowledge is, knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit and wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
