If you have 20 upvotes and 10 downvotes, it feels better to see the aggregate number; but if you have 20 downvotes and 10 upvotes, it feels better to see the two numbers separately...

Because we all want to be liked 😊

When you have more upvotes, “forget about the haters!”

When you (probably) were an asshole, “think about the people who do agree! You’re not alone!”

Size is what’s important, direction is meaningless.

    100 upvotes, hell yeah

    100 downvotes, hell yeah

50 upvotes, 50 downvotes, hell yeah

    0 votes, aw man

If size is important, i’d rather have 1 really big upvote than 100 little ones.

        You fool!

How can 1 big vote ever compete with 100 little ones, there are simply too many. Like a swarm of ants

Would you rather fight one horse-sized upvote or 100 duck-sized downvotes?

How hard I slam my left mouse button on a vote should be graphically represented.

Oh yea 0 votes is so sad… I wonder if federation is broken or I got shadowbanned or something…

I think the thing is not about the score, its just an affirmation that, yes, someone in the world did hear you and you didn’t decrease the lifespan of your keyboard for no reason…

But I’d rather have a “read by [X] Users” stat that is neutral, rather than a negative stat like a downvote…

Getting downvoted feels like when you were in K-12 school and the entire class bullying you

I am frequently baffled by what people here downvote.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
