Assuming around USD $220 for a 16GB kit of DDR5, it now costs $27.50 more to run Ubuntu.

His skin would clear up if he stopped drinking.

Microsoft will have plenty more missteps as they continue to fall from relevance.

Israel First, amirite MAGA?

What’s your actual fucking goal?
I’d wager that the part they aren’t saying out loud has to do with a few different things:
Distraction from Epstein, which seems to be working. Iran operations now dominate the news cycle.
War offers some economic gains, at least in the short term for a few big players.
War fits into the “law and order” narrative Trump is desperately trying to milk, in a way that the DHS debacles have not done. Unprovoked attack on Iran even just as a show of force has been a conservative wet dream since at least the Bush Jr. days.

On one hand, nukes have been a clear deterrent for most of the time they have existed. Their use in these operations against Iran wouldn’t just be unprecedented, but it would be wasteful too: what targets require such firepower instead of other, more sensible options? It’s ironic, but nukes are arguably worse weapons when deployed versus sitting in their silos while deployment is threatened.
That said, “unprecedented” doesn’t mean much any more, and Trump is totally the kind of person who would drop one just because he can. Instead of “I am become death” we’d get “I am dropping a big, beautiful bomb. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
But the repercussions would be massive. On a scale not yet seen. I’m not talking about repercussions from Iran: the world would need to stand up against MAGA in a big way. Much bigger than has happened so far. I’m not even sure what it would look like, frankly.

Pay your taxes or shut up.

Absoutely. It takes like 5 seconds to get a real photo.
But I have considerable downvotes on my original comment. Maybe bots. Maybe AI bros who need to see the light and that their tech is based on the death of IP law.

Exactly, makes no sense to me

Really cool article. Except this bit:
The image of Saturn was generated with ChatGPT.
Fucking why? Could have saved time and energy with traditional search. Leave the slop out, please.
Definitely makes a lot of sense to use a VM for it. Though there is something fun about having a spare laptop and just playing on bare metal.
I’m running Mint currently
I’m wondering if there is a lot of benefit to going more barebones
Not really. On the scale at which homelabs operate, I doubt you’ll see any difference at all – except what might be the significant time sink to set everything up again.
I’m not having any issues with my current setup
I’d put this firmly in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” category. Mint is already a distro which is ultimately a Debian derivative. It operates more like Debian as opposed to, say, Fedora or Arch. While it can be enticing to explore the many options of Linux, the benefit isn’t clear here.
Now, distro hopping on a nonproduction system? Something where you don’t care what’s on it and you just want to experiment? That’s one of the best parts of being a Linux user. But at least do that first before even approaching breaking something that isn’t broken.
It sounds more like you want to have fun distro hopping, and believe me: I can tell you from experience that distro hopping isn’t fun if you have to rely on that machine.

The labels are seeking $150,000 for every single song taken, the maximum allowed by law.
A shocking misrepresentation of the value of their product.

I’m really tired of seeing this idiot quoted.

Yeah, no argument there. But I would argue companies do that kind of thing already for various reasons (many having to do with taxes).
Overall, I don’t think it’s a good argument against regulation to say “let’s regulate less because people will cheat”. People will always cheat.

Really need to start calculating settlements like this as a function of profits. Otherwise this is just factored in as a business cost and does not actually apply as a consequence.
$135 million may seem like a lot to regular people, but it’s not for Google. If we are letting these tacit monopolies stay in place, then the kid gloves at least need to come off when they’re being dealt with. Scale up consequences so they are appropriate for the size of the corporation.

I only charge myself to 80% each time in a vain attempt to extend my feeble existence

Very wrong. The more you do it, the easier to trace. Not doing it at home means very little in the long term.
As with anything, it depends on how many resources it takes to find you versus the amount you do it.
But the other point is: not only is it illegal, but it’s considered quite rude not to give a callsign. Ham radio is one hobby that hasn’t been ruined yet by the kind of devil-may-care attitude seen online.
Yeah that’s fair. My RAM usage is through the roof lately, but it pretty clearly happened when I switched to a multimonitor setup. I’m much more likely to have a lot of stuff in the background now because it’s easier to have a lot open at the same time in the practical sense.
But I was lucky enough to grab a 64GB kit before prices went into the sky. Believe it or not, I was regularly up against the limit when I had 32GB.
