Topic per title, basically.

For me: after setting up all the integrations and fall overs using the arr stack and Jellyfin (inc Sabnzdb etc)… I keep circling back to Nova video player.

It’s arguably not even self hosting…but there something undeniably cool about sticking a USB stick into a router, installing a single app on your TV and boom, done. EDIT: of course, it can consume the *arr stack, integrate with Ombi etc

IOW, I really like stuff that simple to set up and punches above its weight class.

      Does it have any particular benefits over using a random public instance? All I’ve heard is mostly needing heaps of bandwidth and storage.

        Since I already host a bunch of stuff, it hasn’t been a big burden for me. I get to laugh any time one of the popular instances goes down or has some admin/mod controversy, but the tradeoff is I have to manually subscribe to everything since I don’t have an “All”.

        I mostly did it because this is the only way to truly own your lemmy identity. I hope one day it will be possible to link accounts on different instances together so that migrating doesn’t lose your history.

    Self hosting our budget with Actual has been a game changer for my partner and I. No other budget app really worked for us but this was super easy and the PWAs really make a difference.

      The thing that really kills me with actual budget instead of firefly philosophy differences is that a “budget per month” app needs to have some flexibility with dates and categorization which I don’t find in actual budget. At the very least, setting a different “beginning of the month”.

      I get paid on the 27th-30th of the month, that is my budget for the following month but according to actual budget, that is my budget for the month of money I have already spent. Likewise with bills, I transfer money to an account where all the bills automatically come out of after I get my paycheck, but those are bills coming out of the budget for the following month.

      You can’t budget with money you don’t have yet… Especially for people with variable salaries (Belgium pays money for the days you bike to work, getting expenses paid back, etc…)

      If I transfer my bills money on the 1st of the month (last possible day) and then before the 1st of the month the next month, then all metrics and budgeting for 2 months are fucked up and inaccurate with no way to fix it.

        I also get paid near the end of the month, the way I handle it in Actual is I budget at the beginning of the month with the money I have at that point. When the salary comes in, I click on the now non-zero unbudgeted amount and select “Hold for next month”, which moves the amount to the next month for budgeting purposes (the transaction keeps the correct date). It is an extra step, but I have two jobs, both of which pay on different dates, which also vary with weekends and holidays, so I don’t think there is a better way in my case.

        Actually, I just had a look at the docs and it seems the holding for next month can be toggled to be automatic. Will have to try that https://actualbudget.org/docs/budgeting/#automatic-holding-of-funds

        I switched the setting from “envelope budgeting” to “tracking budgeting” to address this. Budgeting based off what I anticipate making the following month. The Actual peeps will tell you that in envelope budgeting you should have enough money for the next month ahead of time so it’s working as designed. I get that, kinda, but tracking budgeting has just made more sense for me.

      …But not having that European easy bank import option and having to manually download your sheets and import them is probably why I didn’t stick to it very well…

          I’ll have to look again, I should have specified I’m in the US but it used some kinda integration that was common for EU banks but not US ones, so I had to import reports manually.

          I looked quickly, but didn’t see an answer. Does Sure.am let you download your transactions into something like Actual or Firefly-iii or is it all within the hosted platform? I saw an option to self host, but didn’t see the integrations.

          I’m trying to find something to pull into my firefly-iii instance and am currently abusing the Monarch API but it has some issues. I also wrote my own scrapers but they are fragile and I’d rather just integrate directly with plaid.

          Oh sorry, what I meant was there’s a standard to do that with European banks, yeah, but US banks don’t have it, so you gotta manually download and import stuff. At least that’s how it was last I checked.

            Something fish, something fin? I forget what it’s called, but there was some integration I found for, like, $2/month(?) and it worked pretty well from what I remember. I think this was around 2 or 3 years ago.

            Every few years, I try installing Actual Budget, and have my wife compare it to how she uses YNAB, just to see if we can finally make the switch to fully self-hosted. Plus YNAB has become obsessed with new features and new customers while ignoring many of the issues that still haunt those with legacy knowledge of the platform. All while continuing to raise the price.

      I was using Wealthica before they started charging and Actual Budget + Simplefin is so much better. I’m really happy all my financial info is just mine and not exposed to any other company. The expense for Simplefin is worth it and minimal.

        Would you mind sharing more about your experience with Simplefin? I’ve been looking to make the jump, but I’ve read a fair amount of feedback that seems to indicate it might not be worth it given issues with instability, inconsistency syncing, etc.

          It’ll be down to your bank’s rules. My main bank and brokerage work flawlessly, sync everyday. My secondary bank and Amex need to be reauthenticated every week or two. So I just update those once a month. Just go on simplefin and run the 2FA plus some waiting.

          It doesn’t sync non-bank stuff, so there’s some RRSP providers I just enter manually.

          For $20 cad a year its fine. I wouldn’t use it to track daily expenses unless you know everything will work. I do all my finances once a month so its fine for me.

      Game changer is a great way to phrase it. It’s no exaggeration to say it changed my partner and my lives. It gave us the confidence to save for and buy a house. I’ve never felt more in control of my finances before.

    I was going to come in and say pihole, hands down as it got me into home labbing. But then I got reading some of the responses and my thoughts changed to Home Assistant because I can automate so much. An app that I had purchased to help me stay on top of my medications decided to go subscription so I was able to use HA to set up reminders to take my drugs go off on my watch which I would turn into reminders to do so much more. Than I thought Docker, because it is so much easier to install things with docker. Than I thought OpenWRT because I now have a real firewall that I can do so much more with than my ISPs dinky little thing. I was almost ready to reply when I read your question over again and I saw you mention the *arr stack and Jellyfin, which got me thinking how much I love that. Which reminded me of someone saying immich. I have to go for some blood letting today so I keep my blood req in paperless. I self host nextcloud and that is one thing I am looking at finding alternatives to but all that being said picking one is like picking a favourite family member, sure some you may like more than others but you are never going to tell which one.

        Don’t take it the wrong way, the *arrs are an awesome ecosystem and tool. Very cool integration and administration.
        But I could life without or replace them. Things like Jellyfin, immich, homeassistant are more integral in the sense of usage and replacing them would be a whole ordeal I would ideally like to avoid.

        I think what they mean is that things like Traefix, arr, et al are means to an end. The ideal situation is that you don’t need to touch them after they’re set up. Jellyfin, on the other hand, is something you actively sign into and use

        Short version: modified MILS plates carry 12V power across the whole layout. Inside those MILS plates is enough space to hide a Raspberry Pi Pico W, which controls lights and motors on this plate. It communicates with the Mosquitto broker to coordinate actions, e.g light effects.

    Hubs ADHD is making mint off my noodling - modified bingie on Kodi so he can find new and interesting things on the massive file server, an internally .htaccess’d domain that holds QR codes for him to check operating instructions and guides, and HA so he can make sure he’s turned lights off and tell him when the tea is steeped.

    My own art gallery. Started feeling the ick about posting on social media and just moved everything to my own hand-coded home page in Lustre. Feels nice to have a little space that’s just mine.

    It ain’t much, but I’m also pretty proud of my Forgejo+actions setup. Pushing a commit and seeing my services update, knowing it’s all happening on “my” (VPS, but still) infra gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling.

      What kind of art? Do you paint, create pottery, etc. My lady friend is a self taught painter, and does some mind blowing stuff. Hell, I can’t even put paint on a wall or draw stick figures. LOL She tells me I am biased, but I respond that I know good art when I see it. I always wanted to get into pottery. That seems like it would be super cool.

    I still love getting messages via xmpp from friends and family using my own snikket/ejabberd instances after years of use. Calls as well.

    Video conferences via jitsi meet fill my heart with joy since the covid epidemic. These are also xmpp based. It’s just a cool lightweight protocol.

        Well yunohost seems to support prosody, that should work very well. Snikket is basically just prosody with some extensions preinstalled. If you want an xmpp server on yunohost you could just install prosody or alternatively run snikket in a docker container. Prosody might even be easier to setup if you can install it via the yunohost gui.

      XMPP is nice but even with all of the quality of life extensions it definitely feels clunky. I tried switching to it recently from matrix and while matrix leaves a lot to be desired I found it was more useful in its current form than XMPP.

    I run many of the usual suspects, but I would say Home Assistant is on the top of the list.

        The only drawback is that most smart home devices aren’t on the UPS, so if power goes out, you still lose most connected devices.

          Kind of. A lot of my stuff is also on battery and the security camera and router is on UPS so during a power outrage I still have access to cameras, per room sensors and all the door and lock sensors. I would say ~50% of devices are still accessible.

    apart from the usual suspect like, Jellyfin+Plex (still have some straggler users that need to upgrade their players for JF to work properly), Immich, nextcloud etc, I really like running Birdnet-Go. I give it my CCTV camera feeds and it uses a NN to identify birds it hears.

    I get statistics about species heard around the property, charts to correlate detections to seasons and weather, and some interesting info about rarer species that I didn’t know were in my area. Every morning I check it to see if there was anything new recorded.

    it doesn’t really have a purpose, though the data can be submitted to larger databases, but it’s just a nice thing to have.

    With a good few plugins it’s gotten to the point now that my Jellyfin is my

    Movie Shows And music service

    Its been really fun to hunt for blurays of my favorite shows and take the time to rip them and get all the extras labeled.

    Same goes for looking at bandcamp and buying CDs again.

    I still have some media I liberate… I mean they won’t make blurays of everything sadly.
