    My two cents:

Creating a monetary union without a fiscal union was a grievous macroeconomic mistake. For example, it allowed countries like mine (Germany) to abuse the shared currency to artifically lower the cost of exported goods, with the downstream effect of allowing it to “move” parts of its state debt to others, like e.g. France.

There really are only two ways towards eventual stability: Create a fiscal union (which for all intents and purposes means turning the EU from a confederation into a sovereign state), or breaking up the monetary union.

The latter, however, would destroy large parts of the export-dependent German economy almost overnight. It would almost certainly lead to economic suffering not seen since the Great Depression in the short-term. To steelman the argument for a moment, it could theoretically be a (state-)controlled burn to purge all those ailing German big corporations almost exclusively dependent on fossil fuels that have been refusing to innovate for more than 30 years now and be the catalyst for a rapid green transition. But there’s 0% chance of any far-right party desiring this, let alone being able to pull it of.

So that means either we create a fiscal union, or we’re screwed with a monetary system that will continue to amplify existing problems, instead of being a tool capable of addressing them equitably.

Yep Nationalists hate being beholden to international groupings… And in general the wider you disperse/distribute power and protections the healthier a democracy and liberal state you have.

This is part of why Trump/Putin let a bunch of their treaties lapse. Authoritarians don’t like sharing power or anything that might hold them back.

International agreements are good, international trade is good, independent oversight, fair and mutually obligating agreements are good. Departments of fairness and regulatory bodies are good.

Consolidation of power, concentration of wealth/power/benefits, are bad. Favouritism is bad. Nationalist ferver, and attacks on opponents are bad, destruction of regulatory bodies and rules, is generally bad.

Weidel is just cosplaying nationalism. As with many other European far right movements, the AfD is supported by Russian money and Russian information warfare operations. Russia wants to see the EU weakened, if not broken apart. And so their sockpuppets act upon their orders from Moscow.

EU needs downsizing or reforms. There have been reports of EU politicians running into corpo buildings en masse after the ordinary meetings. Also the ever expansion taking in low living standars countries hurts existing member’s health. Then you have this abmyssal veto thing. Countries’ polices not really working together, unrealistic migration politics and the most important: bottle caps n paper straws.

I wish we could keep the good parts and drop the corrupt/unecessary prestigue projects.

None of the points you mentioned explain the AfD’s stance on Europe and none of chances that would benefit the EU are going to be even remotely realised by the AfD. So what’s your point?

The nationalists are the ones blocking reforms. So if you support the EU, then vote for a party that also supports the EU.

If you try to make a new agreement with all the member states I think you’ll find it extremely difficult. The EU just has to be messy because of its members.

Spoken like a true Kremlin-Trumpster. The EU is the best chance we have to stand against the forces of darkness. More EU and tighter integration is the way.

You’re not meaningfully disagreeing with the parent comment, and nothing they’ve said implies they support Trump or Putin.

Just because Trump and Putin dislike the EU, it doesn’t mean that everyone who dislikes the EU is a MAGA republican or Russian bot. That’s how it reads.

Take Brexit for example, it had both support and opposition from right across the political spectrum. Like Boris Johnson, he supported Brexit but he was frequently in Ukraine and absolutely hates Putin lol

No, but 99 out of 100 times someone disliking the EU and then whining about “bottle caps” and “paper straws” got their talking points from one of those bots directly or from one of the far-right culture-war bullshit influencers who get their instructions from the same source. Because that’s one of their popular topics, which is not surprising given that any actually substantial criticism of the EU would need more context, basic political understanding and in-depth reasoning than what those propaganda tools just pushing simpke narratives allow.
