There’s a decent chance they understand what “big game hunters” are, and are responding to them as a threat, which means this won’t be the only incident.

Pretty sure I’ve read that elephants will recognize poachers. They will remember you, they will kill you.
If crows can eusocially pass on their grudges maybe they can as well.
I, won’t be volunteering to study that though.
