Don’t get me wrong, I really love the idea as well and really hope for Slate to succeed and make the v2 even better. All previous EV pickups were targeting the full-size truck crowd, but I think a compact EV truck makes wayyy more sense!

Unfortunately with the US EV incentives gone the Slate is way overpriced for what it is. 150 mile range and manual crank windows and no radio or speakers at all on the base model for $28K. I can understand wanting a low tech vehicle but I think they might have gone a step too far.

Unfortunately manufacturers are starting to get wise to this as well. I recently bought a new Vizio smart TV with no intentions of connecting it to the internet and during the initial setup it kept very persistently insisting that it needed to be connected and after setup it constantly bitches at me that it’s not connected.

That’s interesting. I checked my logs and I only see a few hits for insights.navidrome.org but nothing for demo.navidrome.org. I’m on version 0.59.0 so I’m a little behind.

I mean, if you want a full mirror, rolling your own backup target is going to be the cheapest option even with the current high price of hardware. Other options are cloud storage, or using another media like tape. Cloud storage is of course an on going cost which rules it out for me, not to mention privacy concerns. There are certain “cold storage” options from cloud storage hosts which are considerably cheaper but they have limitations on how the data can be accessed and how often. The tape route is possible but it’s not really viable for home use due to the high upfront cost of the drives. Outside of that, backing up a subset of your storage as others have suggested is the only other option. Creating viable backups without breaking the bank is a challenge as old as computers, unfortunately.

So you have 56TB of total storage, but how much of that 56TB is actually used? Take the amount of storage used and add 10-12% to that figure. Now you create a new NAS (preferably off-site) with that amount of storage and that becomes your backup target. Take an initial backup (locally if possible to speed up the process) and then you can use something like rsync to create incremental backups going forward. This is the method I’ve used and so far it has worked out well. I target 10-12% more than the amount of used storage for my backup capacity because my storage use grows reasonably slowly. If your usage grows faster you might want to increase your “buffer” a little more so that you’re not having to constantly add drives to your backup target.

The Linux client sucks

These morons really think AI is going to allow them to replace the technical folks. The same technical folks they severely loathe because they’re the ones with the skills to build the bullshit they dream up, and as such demand a higher salary. They’re so fucking greedy that they are just DYING to cut these people out in order to make more profits. They have such inflated egos and so little understanding of the actual technology they really think they’re just going to be able to use AI to replace technical minds going forward. We’re on the precipice of a very funny “find out” moment for some of these morons.

Oh no! Anyway…

You can just use analog security cameras and a DVR of your choosing. Don’t let the word analog fool you, the cameras are available in up to 4K resolution. Since the video is recorded to the DVR and not some random company’s server it is safe. It requires a little more setup and know-how but it is by no means difficult. Check the surveillance section on B&H’s website. There are tons of options.

Might also consider looking into Navidrome support. Not sure if it’s even possible but in my experience Jellyfin’s music experience is kinda crappy.

Ah, feels good to know I just set up my Navidrome server and have been obtaining my entire music library for personal streaming.
