Time to switch to Plan9!

I don’t want to sync files at all. I want files to only be on the server, accessible via web interface. Like Google Drive.

I’m not giving Google anymore money. I’m actively going to vote for their competitor, Motorola+GrapheneOS.
(Not buying used Pixel.)

I’ve been wandering the laptop desert for a few years now. Lenovo, Dell, System76, Framework, StarLabs.
I’m currently on a Dell Pro 13, but the keyboard really sucks and the hardware isn’t fully Linux compatible.
StarLabs had keyboard issues and terrible battery life.
Framework seems like Linux was an after thought. Their HiDPI display isn’t fully Linux compatible.
I recently got my parents an X13 and everything just works. Camera, Bluetooth, graphics, display. All good.
I prefer 13in screens, but I’ll take the repairability of the T14 gen 7!

That’s cool… I guess…
What I really want is to continue to use F-Droid though.

Nobody ever does. All AI demos are just: look at this mountain of generated text.

Whoa. There are actually consequences? ArsTechnica is actually sorry??

but if simple is what you want then a Synology DS225+ should get you up n running quickly
Ah, I forgot to mention I’m already running my own Debian server. Ideally, I wouldn’t have to buy another device just for online file management.
Which part of the seafile install was it that made you back off?
There’s proxies behind proxies behind proxies that proxy to proxies so you can proxy while you proxy.
I managed to install half of it, but then some of the many servers you need to install didn’t end up talking with each other. I tried studying the architecture for a bit, but still couldn’t figure out which server’s request I needed to rewrite in order for the other server to see it.
How would you pick a successor?
Would it really be worse to let a flawed bastard take over, versus deleting everyone and all their content?
A flawed bastard might be a government. Given that the US is in full fascist mode, I personally would consider deleting everyone’s content the fast, easy, and secure option. Although, not necessarily the best option for the community.
Transferring it to someone else isn’t that simple. I mean, I guess it can be if you’re willing to hand it over to some random stranger with zero vetting… and then hope they don’t do anything malicious.
Ideally, you’d want to hand it over to someone trustworthy. That takes work.
I’ll never understand why someone would go through the trouble of starting an instance and then tolerate nonsense on the instance that they (again) literally own.
Totally guessing here, but I think this comes from wanting to be fair and open about content.
Everyone always complains about censorship, eco chambers, and freedom of speech. So I could see someone being very tolerant and allowing lots of content on their server.
Users also harass moderators and post about them on yepowertrippinmods, so allowing shit probably saves them some harassment.
It seems to take a specific type of person to be able to run a server. They can’t be too nice. They have to have a clear line in the sand.
I sometimes (maybe more than sometimes) 2nd guess myself. “Am I being too sensitive?” “Did they really mean it like that?” “Was I too harsh?”

Amazon is a hard one to find an alternative to. Mostly what I try to do now is buy directly from the brand. But they don’t always have their own website.
Other times I can find the item locally. I’ll buy it even if it costs a little more.
Also, sometimes the item is only available at Amazon or Home Depot online, for example. In that case, I’ll pick Home Depot cuz they’re a slightly smaller megacorp.
As a very last resort, I’ll will begrudgingly buy from Amazon. Like if the item is only on Amazon or if the item is significantly cheaper there…
But, fuck Amazon Prime! That’s a total scam. I canceled that years ago and never looked back.

Oooh! They made Peertube?!

Unfortunately, Google and Apple have crippled PWAs. Surprise, surprise. They don’t get the attention, features, or bug fixes native apps get.
But also, a lot of apps are just views into websites anyway. So I bet a lot of apps could just be PWAs.
The main hurdle is getting people to install the PWAs instead of apps. It’s a different install flow.

Too late! I’m moving to Fluxer!

If the tool were good, we’d all just use it.”
Eggs-mothafucking-zackly!!!
There are no daily pressure campaigns to convince you to use a laptop or a smartphone. The value of those are self-evident.
AI on the other hand… -_-

Yeah… But Google and US Big Tech have too much power and are making the world shitty for everyone. I’d like to contribute my grain of sand to someone else.

Yeah, I’m not buying any more Pixels. I got the Fairphone 6! It’s good! I’m in the US, so I got it from Clove. Works fine on T-Mobile.
Although, I’m currently running Android… Probably have to install e/OS or something.
I hope Fairphone can continue to grow to eventually meet Graphene’s hardware requirements.

I don’t review that shit. Those PRs tend to be huge walls of text. If you didn’t take any effort into preparing something for me, then I’m not making any effort into reviewing it for you.
Let the slop flow! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
When it breaks, I’m also not jumping in to fix it.
Actually, one thing I want to do is switch from services being on a subdomain to services being on a path.
I’m getting tired of having to update DNS records every time I want to add a new service.
I guess the tricky part will be making sure the services support this kind of routing…
