FWIW, my state is basically the opposite of land locked. I’m not comfortable with telling lies. I don’t mind saying things that are inaccurate to make someone laugh but I don’t want to make anyone believe those claims.

I suspect they meant the patterned clothing that confuses cameras.

I am against constant surveillance and these are huge privacy violations, especially because it seems very unlikely they’re storing the media exclusively locally. Also, the fact that they can be more discreet than many other options for recording is concerning.

The first two ads I ever saw for these were of a guy using them to quietly cheat at, IIRC, a board game; and of someone having a conversation, only to realize the other party was recording it. They looked like legit ads, but I’m not sure how anyone could think that was positive press.

All that said, the number of people advocating violence in response is alarming. Depending on the environment, I feel the appropriate response is to ask the wearer to remove them and then, if they refuse, remove either yourself or them from the situation. Obviously no one solution fits all solutions and there may be situations where violence is warranted, but it is surprising to me that it seems to be the default.

An erstwhile co-worker used to create passwords by stringing together the names of porn actresses and, I think, adding two random numbers at the end.

When I was a kid I had a book called The Science of the X-Men (which that site lists for $11 but eBay lists for anywhere from $100-1500) that attempted to use real world physics to explain how the powers of the X-Men might work.

Mostly the explanations came down to “I dunno, maybe black holes?” For example, it speculated that Jean Grey might have a microscopic black hole in her brain and had subconsciously learned to use it to open the other end in other brains and somehow vibrate the brain matter in a way to communicate telepathically.

Anyway, I don’t recall whether it covered any shapeshifters, but if so, it probably handled it the same way Animorphs did (as others have mentioned in this thread), but with black holes instead of z-space.

I’ve never put stickers on any of my equipment, personal or otherwise … But someone at my work once told me that one could procure plastic shells you can put on Macbooks so you can a. Not damage the device and b. Take your stickers with you when you leave.

The biggest issue I have with it is that I have Linux on all my personal systems and OSX on my work laptop and sometimes switch rapidly between them.

My fingers don’t seem to adapt as quickly, though, and I often press the wrong combination between them.

I remember a while ago - when, like in your anecdote, I mostly coded in bash - I had a dream that I found out people were invoking my scripts in a manner that essentially overrode settings that might (or, in my case, might not) have been set at the beginning of the script.

This never (AFAIK) happened in waking hours, but I was very offended in the dream.

A fact that I like to share from my personal history: I took four years to graduate from a two year college because I was taking every computer class they offered … Except that I skipped “intro to Unix” because when was I ever going to use that?

My entire career has been largely based on knowing how to use Linux.
