I have not experienced such on Reddit myself, but I am diversifying my use, just in case.

This place looks nice so I’ve created an account and set up a new bookmark.

    The guy that said:

Finding things on their way to collapse was much easier than finding the next bargain.

I genuinely don’t understand how is he still free and alive. He’s as close to a real life devil you’d find. In his own words - he’s working on societal collapse to gain more power. Can someone do something already?

You ever been on Roblox? I’m not going to shelter him from what’s out there. Together we’re going to learn how to outsmart and out play every kind of troll. My daughters are much stronger now after playing toxic COD Zombies lobbies a decade ago. I’m an old man with three wonderful kids who will never bully or belittle another animal, even the nasty animals online.

Edit: do you think my child is unsupervised and I would allow a pedo to chat my kids up? “Roaming around time square”? Y’all need to stop pearl clutching. If you leave your kids unsupervised, that’s on you. My children are very aware of what is and isn’t appropriate.

          Buddy…

Ask anyone that used to be a child if their parents knew about all the shit they got up to.

You think you know everything and are on top of, but so do every parent.

Hopefully your kid knows how to take care of himself.

Many don’t have the capacity left to make conscious decisions about these things - either they are already living paycheck to paycheck or it is too abstract for them to realize it might bite them and everyone else on a future date. Even if i have ideas for the first group that I have no power to make reality, I don’t have a solution for the second group either.

I’m watching Gladiator tonight for the first time in 20 years. It’s hardly new but so painful to watch again through the lens of the current state of America. It went from ominous historical warning 25 years ago of power, weakness and how men act in opportune moments to a primer on current affairs.

If people cared about “the children” they wouldn’t let them on the Internet until they were 21.

If people cared about humanity they wouldn’t allow “the algorithms” to exist or let social media or news media exist they way it does now.

Even if op’s case was satirical, it is quite ageist honestly. It is the difference between freedom and submission. Such outdated statements about increasing the common age is just a fascist disguise - minors which includes teens have less and less rights just because the belief that children shall be protected by bans is acceptable.

That mentality is why teenage pregnancies happen. “Oh, just don’t do it kids! Sex is bad! Sex is only for adults!”

Schools and parent HAVE to do a better job about teaching kids how to actually be safe on the internet and how to interact with content on the internet. Keeping children uneducated only makes uneducated adults.

Plus there are so many children who need the internet for both learning purposes, and safety purposes. And also how the fuck would 18-20 year olds be able to do daily life things like have a job, have a bank account, and access government services without the internet.

Keep people educated, stop hiding them from uncomfortable and “dangerous” topics. Silence and ignorance is what governments and companies want.

We have kids protesting ICE on Roblox. Gen Z rebeled in Nepal with social media. Young people deserve freedom too.

I don’t think that’s the solution though, kids (including teens to some extent) can be on the internet but it requires better parenting. It’s better to monitor what they are doing online until they are like 15 or 16, maybe 17 if you have a really good reason too. Limit screen time, be around to answer questions your kid has about what they might see.

Little kids though? Absolutely should be off the internet. Anyone under 10 shouldn’t be on the internet period in my opinion. 10-12 is kinda a gray zone to me where it’s definitely up to the parents and if they think their child is ready.

Also since they weren’t allowed on the internet till they were 21, those 21 year olds won’t know how to act on the internet. So now there’s 21 year olds roaming around who will need to figure all that shit out. They might get other aspects of being an adult but the internet will be completely alien.

It’s like when I saw people saying kids shouldn’t be allowed into the grocery store because someone was annoyed that kids didn’t know how to behave there yet. You just create a new and larger problem where adults don’t know how to act.

Not really. Free speech is a cultural construct. It doesn’t exist without a huge swath of pre-agreed norms regarding rights, speech, freedom, … I’ll have you know, there are modern philosophers who argue against human rights. They would say human rights language pretends to be objective and universal, but it floats without a metaphysical anchor (unlike in the past) and in practice they only exist if a sovereign power recognizes them.

Yes social media is a problem, however that alone does not justify banning everyone under 21 from using the entire internet. As the person who I replied to said they wanted.

Social media is its own problem that’s needs regulations to come under control.

My nephew has a new baby. Her parents are constantly waving their phones in her face; sending pics back and forth; generally doing ‘millenial things’ with their phones when not actively attending the baby. Then proceed to get all freaked out when the baby expresses interest or curiosity in the phone.

Kids mimic their parents behavior and interests. If you want kids with healthy internet use, you have to have parents model healthy internet use.

Yeah, that’s only for the people that think they care, but are actually ageist and discriminate.

Protecting children comes in hand with protecting humanity. The sole existence of predatory algorithms, and other shit makes age meaningless.

Fucking never. Never ever. I’d sooner cut myself off from all technology and live in the woods than willingly give those creepy fucks my middle goddamn name. There is absolutely nothing good that will come from this company. The people at that company literally fucking movie villains. It’s fucking crazy that absolutely anyone works with them, let alone world governments.

These large scale surveillance companies like Palantir, like Flock, they shouldn’t exist. They should be outlawed. Our government needs probable cause and a warrant to surveil a suspect. If a normal civilian followed you around and filmed you, kept track of you at all times, they’d be arrested for stalking. But for some reason private companies can just watch every man, woman, and child in public and online, catalog all our movements, where we went, how we went there, who was with us, track what we do, what we read, who we know, how we spend our time, what we say, etc., and then permanently log all of that, use it to form dociers on us, predict our behaviors, or desires, ways to manipulate us, and then turn around and sell that data to governments, other companies and private parties. How the fuck is that legal.

Why in the fuck would you ever allow a private, profit-driven company to have that kind of power over your nation, let alone reward it with federal dollars, long term contracts and access to our law enforcement and military data and systems?

Worse, the founders and CEO are unhinged wannabe dictators trying to form their own sovereign techno-states. They’re not even secretive about that. And our goverment is fucking funding these nuts and giving them every detail of the lives of our citizenry, our goverment officials, our military… how fucking stupid do we have to be, guys? I wish I could say it’s just Trump but it’s not. It’s mind boggling.
