I used to do this at my university. Once I saw a maintenance guy tell his friend “watch this” and walk up to me and ask if he could help me get somewhere under the clear assumption that I was lost. I was just like “no, I’m exploring” with that kinda childish stupidity that prevents people from yelling at you. He didn’t know how to respond and just said “Oh, okay” then walked back to his friend and muttered “I didn’t expect that”. Apparently I wasn’t anywhere that was technically off limits just someplace people didn’t generally go.

As if they don’t already have drug problems…

Oh, my bad. I was confused. I assumed ActivityPub was some specific sub-app rather than a general communication protocol. That makes sense. Would still be good to get a list of instances.

Love the idea of a federated github, but I could only find this list of instances, and from my basic test it looks like the search doesn’t bring up projects from other instances? Unless I’m doing something wrong.

Did you know it’s better for the environment to keep an old gas car running than to buy a new electric vehicle? It’s the same principle. One Polyester shirt that lasts 20 years is better than 20 cotton shirts degrading year after year.

This is entirely inconsistent with my experience, so I suspect there is no correlation. My polyester shirts are silky and breathable, and my cotton blankets are rough and scratchy. I’m sure you have your on experiences that seem to validate your view, so I suspect there is no correlation. Perhaps there is some other processing factor that determines how comfortable or breathable a fabric turns out to be.

Only difference I’ve reliably seen between cotton and polyester is that cotton degrades faster, which makes you buy clothes more often. If you throw clothes away a lot, cotton is better for the environment. If you wear clothes until they’re unusable, polyester is better for the environment.

For what it’s worth, a lot of synthetic biologists are looking into Carbon Concentrating Mechanisms (e.g. carboxysomes) so that we can improve carbon capture in native plants. Honestly, as a protein engineer / synthetic biologist myself there’s even odds I could end up working on it too; though, it’s not my first choice.

I’m pretty sure short-sightedness is more a result of patience and critical thinking, but outdoors might help near-sightedness.

Rich people can be fools, and a fool and his money are soon parted. That’s why much of the economy is just everyone trying to scam everyone else.

Is there a solution to this whole government censorship problem? I don’t know networking, but it seems like the centralized systems get the central nodes shut down and the decentralized systems are too easily tracked and/or too inefficient. Reticulum looked interesting, but it was still pretty traceable, and appears to only really be for messaging apps since you have to know where you’re sending to already. Your motion idea has some merit to it, but I was kinda hoping for something more on the software side.
