For some reason, I assumed it would at least be made of some kind of metal. I should have known better lol
I am genuinely surprised… I didn’t know HTC even still existed
They were my favorite when they were big. RIP
They don’t really, they pay ODM to design the phones. Trumps probably paid OMD to reuse the design.
An ODM is a type of company - although it’s very possible they paid the same ODM to make the phones, since they likely have the tooling ready to go.
They do, just don’t release phones in the States anymore. It’s a shame because I really liked their phones.
I thought they were called Google Pixels now since Google bought them for $1.1B in 2017.
Looks like HTC worked with Google on the first Pixel then sold them about half of the R&D talent and non-exclusive rights on the technology. So yes and no.
I really liked their phones.
Have I got good new for you! AND, it’ll be gold ᶜᵒˡᵒʳᵉᵈ!
The Dream and Magic were the beginning of an era!
They were the beginning of a Dream that turned into a nightmare (first for HTC, then for consumers).
Fuck, remember when Android was genuinely open source and we had a little computer with mobile internet that fit in our pockets that we could install our own open source OS ROMs on? What an incredible time to be alive that was.
Just like so many other things, I’m sure that bit will be buried.
Well, HTC is Taiwanese so there really isn’t much of a story there.
Facepalm
Wow, my google-fu failed me pretty spectacularly. I was searching the HTC ban for patent infringement from Apple and at some point crossed with Huawei.
Though having said that, hey Apple, does that camera protrusion look familiar? Ask your lawyers!
Definitely a shame, I swear the second they announce an htc g3, im buying
Haven’t seen them here in Europe in over a decade I think.
All the recent Nokia’s were theirs, so probably more recent than you think. But yeh, nothing since then I think?
Or am I getting my 3 letter company names mixed up?
I’m not getting the new NSA phone, that’s certain.
Yes. Post-microsoft Nokias are/were made by Human Mobile Devices.
I didn’t know the phones were real
They’re only real if you’re a journalist. The random sheep who pre-ordered them are never gonna get theirs. Mark my words.
I’m shocked that it’s real.
Everything time I hear about this phone, it just gets better and better.
Color me flabbergasted.
(Starts shanking gold spray can)
Flabbergasted is a perfect word for when they cover stuff in that cheap gold paint.
So it’s a recoloured 2024 phone from China with a slightly larger battery from the Philippines that can’t charge as fast.
i bet that’s the “assembled in the usa” bit. putting the battery in the phone
Or putting the phone in the box with the charger and manual.
I guarantee there is no manual.
Trump fans don’t know how to read.
It’s for sure that’s all they’re doing.
Motorola and Google made a big deal about building a factory to do actual assembly in North Texas, and it still failed within a year.
If HTC/ trump were doing anything close to that they’d be screaming it from the hilltops.
Isn’t HTC Taiwanese?
Yes they are but they don’t make their phones anymore, they use ODMs in China and the article says the battery was made in the Philippines.
Honestly didn’t expect the frame to be fully gold coloured. I’m curious if HTC just made this for Dump Mobile from old parts.
Sounds like HTC paid ODM to design it, and ODM tweaked some cosmetics for the Trumps.
ODM is a type of company (Original Design Manufacturer) rather than a specific company. I do wonder who actually made it, but it’s likely a company no one’s ever heard of.
Against all expectations, the T1 is actually well priced when compared to the equivalently specced 512GB U24 Pro, and the only things you give up are the 60W fast charging and your dignity.
lol
So just the fast charging then. I don’t think anyone seriously buying this to use has any of the other thing left to give up.
HTC probably gave him a discount not to attach their name
Another great snip:
a phone designed in China, made in China, with the vast majority of parts sourced from China. I’m failing to find any stirring of American pride within me. I’ve certainly felt it before, so I can confirm that it is absent at this time.
The factories name is America
But it’s a conicodence, it actually means beautiful rain in Chinese or something.
Well you’re half right, America in Chinese is 美国,美 means beautiful.
I actually thought about the joke because of the Japanese for rain 雨, which is pronounced as “amé”. So maybe the name is 美雨.
Golden rain of fat man
Yeah, HTC, you know the company from Hawaii-Texas-California, good ol stuff made in the US, from fair payed american workers!!
Is it painted the same shade he uses on his face?
Did people genuinely think they had created a bespoke bit of hardware? Wow.
That a bunch of idiots bought it to begin with should be telling enough.
The idiocy never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think I’ve seen it all, they find a new and ridiculous way to exhibit it.
It’s happening in Australia now as well
Pauline Hanson raised 2.5 million dollars from a lot of really stupid Australians yesterday. Apparently it’s legit as well, though we’ll wait and see.
Half of them are press. I’m starting to believe YouTubers are propping up obvious scams.
Just now catching onto that? Well let me make your day by saving you money with Honey!
(Don’t actually download Honey. It’s just a tracking service)
Actually Honey is way worse than that. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vc4yL3YTwWk
Its a tracking service that steals money intended for someone else. If you want to support your favourite youtuber and click on their affiliate link for a product you want to buy, honey swaps out the affiliate identifier with its own and then “shares” a fraction of what they steal with you. Honey is fucking cancer.
Pablo Escobar phone 2 electric boogaloo.
They probably thought it would be made of actual gold as well.
Eh, it seems like a nothingburger TBH.
On the 2026 Scam Scale ™, rebranding a 2024 phone as flipping it for $500 is… not even that high?
Gestures at Polymarket advertising on the White House lawn
This is stupid and dangerous thinking.
Fully expected it to be recycled Boost Mobile, complete with the chirp.
“WHERE YOU AT!?”
Fake, cheap, and plastic with a huge price tag. What a perfect representation of the United States.
