President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will revisit its stance on Greenland in the coming weeks.
Asked if he expected to take action on the territory, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday: “Let’s talk about Venezuela, Russia, Ukraine. We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months. Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days.”
He added: “We need Greenland from a national security situation. It’s so strategic.”
Fuck trump
He added: “We need Greenland from a national security situation. It’s so strategic.”
The US already has military bases on Greenland in accordance with diplomatic agreements. This isn’t about national security or defense strategy. If it were, there would be diplomatic ways to increase US military presence. This risks losing the diplomatic agreements which allow the US to maintain a military presence there. It won’t be very strategic if US forces get banished from the realm.
This isn’t about national defense. It’s about natural resources. Trump wants to exploit Greenland for its rare minerals the same way he wants to exploit Venezuela for its crude oil.
It’s so transparent.
Greenland is strategic, in addition to mineral extraction. The GOP base may deny global warming, but the powers behind the throne get it. As the Arctic thaws and opens year-round shipping lanes, Greenland becomes prime territory to control.
As to bases, that’s a big chunk of land for our single base to cover. We’ll want several in key locations.
Should not have been surprised over Venezuela, the US has been scheming on that oil for over two decades, but I’d be surprised if we don’t take Greenland, with no real pretense.
🤷
Even his most coherent quotes contradict themselves, and he talks shit all day long. And the phrasing “Greenland deadline” is a little too evocative for my taste, but clickbait is a must these days.
Apparently he thinks one month is ten days…
But yeah, calling that a deadline is kinda clickbaity.
Plus, it sound slike some decision will be made then, when all he said was “let’s talk about Greenland then”.
At best, it’s a deadline for him and his advisors, not for Greenland. Which is ludicrous anyhow.
From what he actually said, it sounds like talks about a potential decision will begin then. That’s not at all what a deadline is.
The way it was reported made it sound like a decision was already made, and actions would be taken by then. That’s not at all what he said though.
There’s already plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize him, so I can’t stand when journalists distort things to make them seem even worse. It gives too much credence to the people defending him by framing all criticism as media spin.
Things are already bad enough without reactionary sensationalism, so just focus on the facts without compromising journalistic integrity. Otherwise it’s just disinformation, which doesn’t help anyone. We’re supposed to be better than this.
focus on the facts
even contemplating invading Greenland is ludicrous
Exactly, and that’s what the journalism should focus on. It detracts from the message when they give it a misleading spin. It’s already bad enough without the distortion of facts. That’s the point I’m trying to make.
yes, it’s not like actually already invaded a country and kidnapped its leader… I mean, stop exaggerating please
It sounds like it’s a deadline for Greenland, which sounds ominous, but really he just said “we’ll talk about it”. Damn I hate how the media sanewash Trump all the time. He’s babbling! Don’t report on it as if he said something of consequence.
If you want every country to get nukes, this is how you do it. Countries with nukes don’t get invaded.
I miss the old world.
It’s a myth. The US could be planning to survive nuclear winter.
We’ve been planning since the 50s, if not the 40s. Can’t imagine any sane government not having plans in place.
Fallout IRL
I’m concerned he thinks he’s able to take Greenland as easy as he was able to kidnap Maduro.
I’m concerned that anybody could think such spearheaded attacks could bring anything but chaos. I agree on Greenland, kidnapping a high value target with a flashy operation has nothing to do with conquest. Successful US dominance was based on diplomacy, imo Trump overrates military supremacy once deprived of diplomatic credibility.
I have thought for a long time that the chaos is the point. They’re not trying to do something strategically smart. They are trying to diminish the credibility of the US. They are corruptly manipulating US markets with big crazy moves as a means of transferring wealth to their friends while also trying to weaken the US.
They started small to see what they could get away with and have been progressively getting more wild with the moves they make.
Don’t know if true but also completely plausible.
He’s destroying the US Dollar basically, passing it’s “power” to its own crypto-currencies. Yes, he’ll destroy the United States long term viability in the process, but hey…
military supremacy
it’s not without limits though
I’m concerned that anybody could think such spearheaded attacks could bring anything but chaos.
What about the last 9 years has suggested to you that he wants anything but chaos?
Won’t it? Not like europe could stop it or we have to choose to go to war with them ig economically and …physically? depends on usa, but they will rather give it up than start a war I bet
For one, Trump’s not thinking. You are ascribing thought and intentions to a man you and I would long ago have sent to the home were he our grandfather.
His handlers put these ideas in his head and soon enough they’ll hand him invasion papers to sign. “Here are the orders you asked us to draw up.” That easy.
Speaking of easy, taking Greenland will be all too easy. Europe didn’t respond appropriately to the Russian threat in its own backyard; they’re hardly going to cross the Pond to oust the strongest military mankind on Earth. Fuck me, the EU is still mumbling about further Russian sanctions, after years of this conflict.
Stories like this are for preparing US citizens, and the world at large, for the coming reality.
Let’s talk about the Epstein files.
Hot take: even if they would get released uncensored and in full, nothing would happen.
We would just have confirmation on what we aready know.
At this point talking about the files is a distraction from the atrocities the US government commits and not the other way around.
Even hotter take: those thousands of pages may contain evidence of pedophelia, sex trafficking and abuse - but it is most likely a misdirect because the estate either wouldn’t release the blackmail material Epstein had on politicians of the world - large scale political crimes that would have them prosecuted in their own country - or couldn’t, because Epstein kept that under tight wrap.
And a molten lava take: the CIA was thr ones who offed Epstein so that Trump would never get access to that material, because then he’d have the same leverage Putin has over Russian politicians and elites, meaning he would have had a much higher chance of taking over the entire country - and they did it out of self preservation for themselves and not for liberty of US citizens.
But also: Venezuela is a distraction from the Epstein files, because most Americans agree that it is disgusting and the perpetrators should face justice. Now Greenland and Colombia is up to bat, because quoteth Trump:
“You shouldn’t be focusing on the Epstein files, but Venezuela, Russia and Ukraine - we’ll talk about Greenland in a couple of weeks” - which is something he said recently in an interview.
But, still: I’d like to personally thank the CIA for preventing a Putin 2.0: the Trumpeting, but also: Trump and everyone else in the released files should be tried and face justice.
Now if you’ll excuse me, this tea is making me feel queezy and I’ve been shedding hair more than usual lately - heck, I even shredded some skin. That’s normal for my age, right?
Yeah, does anybody remember the Panama peppers?
Those were got and spicy
Yeah. I’ve been saying it for some time that Trumps base was more worried about him possibly blowing Clinton than him fucking kids. Trump could make a press statement saying he fucked kids and he loves fucking kids and he wants to continue fucking kids and the only thing that would happen (apart from the fake outrage) is conservatives would normalize fucking kids.
Conservatives HAVE already normalize fucking kids , and shitting his pants too.
A “nato member” threatens invading another NATO member …
Well Europe, we’d better gear up. Although I don’t have much hope for us now our spineless ‘leaders’ don’t even dare to call the Venezuela illegal (let alone an act of war)
I really dislike the narrative ‘eu can’t leave nato’ / 'eu can’t push back on the us because we need them. I’d really like to know:
- how true this is
- how much the people in control want to change this
- how long it will take to change this
The eu can’t allow itself to be treated like this, but also can’t allow itself to be forced into a passive stance of having to agree. The eu needs to be able to stand up to this bully (and all the others).
Well nato membership isn’t an eu thing. It’s up to induvidual countries.
And they can leave, an exit protocol exists. More likely they mean “we are not ready to accept the implications of leaving”
The us thing is probably the dependancy of us produced weaponry
'eu can’t push back on the us because we need them
The question is: For what do we need them?
They certainly will not respect Article 5 of the NATO treaty. They do not respect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. They will use any(!) leverage they have against us, no matter what we do. What do we get for playing nice? Nothing! If I look at Starmer, Merz, Kallas, …, it looks like Chamberlain 2.0 and we know from experience that this will not work.
Maybe we buy some time but I do not see attempts to end the dependency. All I see is the hope that everything will be ok once Trump is gone. I doubt it.
The question is: For what do we need them?
For everyday life mostly payment processors and IT infrastructure. For both of them there’s some change in the plans, but it’s painfully slow and with the orange toddler it’s a reasonable threat to assume that those might vanish from EU overnight if there’s even moderate push for any change which he doesn’t like.
Then there’s obviously international trade, support for sanctions against Russia, support for Ukraine (whatever’s left of it) and a ton of other things, but specially Visa and Mastercard are pretty important part of everyday life for Joe Averages around Europe.
yes God forbid you can’t buy loot boxes in your video games… better be colonized by a rapist pedophile
One word: gmail
Imagine the absolute IT and everyday life apocalypse if all european gmail users were no longer able to view their mails.
Outside of the usual, this possibility was the main push for me to migrate away from gmail.
At least in here Microsoft cloud going out would be a order of magnitude bigger issue than any Google service. Also it’s just not email/instant messaging, a ton of infrastructure on companies, financial and government, are dependent on AWS or Azure. Our team (and many others) could spin up replacement services relatively fast for basic email/file sharing/instant messaging but everything beyond that would be absolute pain in the rear.
I’d imagine gmail would fuck with the average person more (which would then overload every company with support requests though), while microsoft services would screw the corporations. Didn’t even think about how bad that would be.
Overall we’re just completely fucked when it comes to IT infrastructure if the US really wants us to be.
On a personal level that would be worse (in general, I personally don’t use gmail/hotmail/outlook…), I agree. But in here governments, healthcare, insurance companies, banks and pretty much everything relies on US based tech at least somewhat, so all of that going away tomorrow would grind nearly the whole society down to a halt.
Ofcourse we’re spineless, america’s army is way bigger than ours, so yeah what else can we do …
There was a time where great men (actually this was a quote from a great woman, Dolores Ibarruri from Spain) lived in Europe… I guess not anymore
“Better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees.”
Erm, have you heard of the NATO members Greece and Turkey? They’re basically threatening to invade each other since Alexander the Great or something.
If its so strategic you could, Oh I don’t know…cooperate with Greenland and Denmark? You know, like normal world leaders?
hahahahaha referring to donald as normal … suggesting donald to cooperate … where have you been lately ? please start with 2025.
Or you know. Like the US has done before Trump. There are already US military bases and I‘m sure he could have built more and even extracted minerals for a fee. But nope it has to be his. Fuck everyone else, including the US by proxy.
There’s a lot of oil in Greenland. Donnie wants that for his rich buddies.
Yeah, Denmark and the EU would happily let the US military do whatever they want/it needs to defend against Russia and China. This argument is bullshit, just like kidnapping Maduro because if drugs.
If there is one single thing that is consistent, it is that US foreign politics aims at enriching the Trump clan and the US oligarchs. Under this premise, it all makes sense.
The US HAS a base in Greenland. Formerly Thule Air Base, now Pituffik Space Base belongs to the United States Space Force, (which Trump created) and used to station B-52 Bombers and shit like that to threaten the USSR during the cold war.
Thing ist:
The 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement allows the United States to operate the base under a NATO framework, as long as both Denmark and the United States remain NATO members.
(Emphasis by me)
I think Trump wants to leave NATO and keep this important base.
The US is not Trump. There must be a bunch of strategists who think that cooperation is enough. The US billionaires would impeach Trump if the move would be stupid.
So there is more to it. Crazy Trump is a deception.
Taco
I propose a kind of peaceful ring exchange - Greenland to the US, Alaska to Canada, California to Denmark and Texas to Mexico. Yellowstone goes to the Vatican so they can prevent an eruption with prayers. The British kingdoms then go to Ireland, with the exception of Scotland, which goes to Bavaria because of cultural similarities.
Have we forgotten anything? Oh yes. Russia goes to Ukraine. For reparations reasons alone.
do we need to keep the people who live in Alaska? because I get the impression they’re overwhelmingly supporters of rape
I can’t speak for all Alaskans, but I sincerely invite you to go fuck yourself
not my fault that it seems like the only news that comes out of Alaska is republican bullshit
take your anger elsewhere
Take your bigotry elsewhere
don’t have any against Alaskans, all I did was comment on what I see. didn’t say fuck all about my own opinion.
get some fucking reading comprehension, dumbass
now if you mean opinions against MAGATs, well then yes I have opinions on them. but those are backed up, and so are not bigotry
The most sane suggestion in international geopolitics since a very long time!
… with the exception of Scotland, which goes to Bavaria because of cultural similarities.
As a german, I think this is an insult to all scottish people.
Denmark gets Florida, to form the sandbar empire.
No fucking thanks.
Signed a Dane.
You got something against obese senior citizen swingers?
Germany is still far too big. i have several proposals in that regard.
We could rise an anti-fascist protection rampart between the democratic and the fascist states… some places even still have the towers, we just need to turn them around.
you mean all wendic territories should be ceded to Poland?
Only if we want Poland to become even more right-wing. But I’d sure be laugh.
Trust me, the Germans also want to get rid of Bavaria ;)
Don’t forget that Hawaii should go to Iceland due to volcanic brotherhood (and to give the Icelandics an opportunity to get a tan). And NYC goes back to the Netherlands if they’ll take it (think how expensive it would be to add all the bike lanes).
Think of how awesome NYC would be with all those bike lanes and green spaces
I was thinking the same thing after posting! Shut pretty much the whole of Manhattan to cars, only allow bikes and buses. Goods vehicles can deliver during the night. Think of the reduction in noise, smog, stress, and people could get wherever they want so much quicker than they do now!
And NYC goes back to the Netherlands if they’ll take it
As long as it gets renamed back to New Amsterdam
Why they changed it, I can’t say.
People just liked it better that way
And they have to get bikelanes first
“let’s talk about Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Canada. Also, where’s my fucking Nobel Peace Prize!? I’m the president of peace! I think we’re going to have to do something about Mr.Nobel as well.”
…
Denmark and the US are both in NATO, and NATO already has Greenland.
This is like Donald threatening Melania to steal her make up.
US: We need to violate your national security for our national security
to exploit your natural resources.2 months == 20 days. Not senile at all.
It is his typical “If I set a deadline sometime in the near future, then they will probably stop talking about it because they will have forgotten about it, just like I will have forgotten about it”. He did it with his healthcare plan, his plan for eradicating ISIS and so forth.
I wish journalists would stop asking him about Greenland, because it only serves to remind him about it, and make him aware it is something which makes people talk about him, which really turns him on as a pathological narcissist. If they stopped asking him about it, he would stop talking about it and forget it in those 20 days to 2 months.
I wish journalists would stop asking him about Greenland, because it only serves to remind him about it
Half right. The above blurb clearly states that he started talking about it:
President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will revisit its stance on Greenland in the coming weeks.
Asked if he expected to take action on the territory
Yet the journalist couldn’t resist egging him on, and yeah, I resent that. He must be such an easy target for journalists: prod him, you always get a controversial quote. And that’s a big part of what got him into & keeps him in power.
We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months. Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days.
60 days = 20 days. Got it.
We need Greenland from a national security situation. It’s so strategic.
Much strategic. So situation.
I’ve been regularly thinking about John Oliver’s segment on how this loon is undeniably, hilariously stupid, but that he’s equally dangerous, and the former often seriously undercuts the latter. He sounds like he’s having a stroke most of the time, sure, but I keep wondering how long it will take for leaders to figure out that they need to take his gibberish seriously. Maybe the latest abduction of a world leader will clue them in.
I wonder if they will deport everyone who will illegally enter the US on Greenland
A related question I have: Was the US ever (publicly) interested in “acquiring” Greenland before Trump? His comments are the first of the sort I ever noticed, but I could imagine the idea having a longer tradition.
They were literally offered Greenland by the Danish ambassodor during WWII, and could have kept it after the war, but chose to hand it back. So no, the purposes of the US with Greenland has been served perfectly fine with the previous diplomatic arrangements they have had.
There is no sense to this other than Trump sees how big and beautiful it looks on a map in the same colour as the US territory.
No
Trump has flouted the idea in 2019 already, and there is some history. But just to be clear, the mere fact that the USA have expressed interest in Greenland one way or another over the centuries does of course not legitimize that interest! And afaics there’s nothing more to it. Just “interest” a.k.a. greed, expansionism, imperialism.
Thanks, very interesting. I think I had read about the US occupying Greenland during WWII (defensively), but not about the buy offers.
And yes, obviously nothing legitimises these threats. I was just interested to see whether Trump came up with it or whether it has some history in US political circles, which it appears it does.
I remember George W Bush talking about buying Greenland from us back in the 2000s. We thought he was a crazy bastard but I actually miss Bush. He was the fun kind of incompetent.
Before that there was a very embarrassing moment in time during the 50s where the US illegally used Greenland for nuclear experiments and left the nuclear waste on Greenland and pissed on us when our government tried to get them to take responsibility for the clean up. I see that as an invasion too, but it was kept hush hush for years. It’s still a problem now that the ice is melting.
